Topic: I think I broke my power supply, need advice....

Today I was printing a new phone case when the wires to my heating cartridge started wobbling around and touching the platform. I sat down to watch it closely and decided to shut down the print as the wires were getting dangerously close to the hotend. I leaned over to press Emergency Stop when I slipped an inch and accidentally kneeled on top of the power supply cable, pulling it out of the wall. I didn't think it was a big deal since it did the same thing as Emergency Stop until I plugged it back in and the printer didn't turn on.

I've checked the board by plugging in the USB and the light still comes on so it isn't an issue there. The power supply brick doesn't light up with the green light anymore so I assume its that.

This really sucks because the PSU is wired into the board.

So, my questions are as follows:

1. Is it possible that it is some simple and not the Power supply?

and if not,

2. How would I go about replacing the power supply and what kind should I buy? I own a year and a half old SD2 and have been using the power supply that came with the printer.

But this . Many users including myself have had exceptional results and reliability with it.
If you have a Printrboard, you will need to Radio Shack it up on a male barrel connector to use with this. But if you have a Sanguinololu or other board with terminal connectors, it is all you will need with some good wires.

If all else fails, and you would prefer to stick with the brick style SD sells, PM me. I have one lying around collecting dust smile

You could crack open the PSU (4 screws) and solder the connections back together.

Ummm... where are these screws? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I honestly don't see any. Are they under the little foam feet?

Would you happen to know the dates when they switched SD2s over to Printrboards? I think mine is a Sanguinololu but I'd like to make sure.

I looked on SD's website and the picture for the PSU they sell has a plug in connector. My stock power supply is physically wired into the board.

That's a great question that I can't answer because I'm not near one.  I have had mine apart (before I upgraded) multiple times and I just don't remember it being difficult.  The connector gets hot while printing and softens the solder so I'm not surprised at what happened to yours.  Pull a rubber foot off and look.

Yep, hidden under the feet. Going to take it apart now and check for issues.

Opened it up, whole device is enclosed in a box that doesn't seem to be openable without cutting things, but the ends are open. I checked the first end and accidentally shocked myself on a metal part before unplugging it, so hey, at least it isn't broken there. The other end has to be the problem as that is where the led is but I can't seem to find it. Going to keep looking.

From what it sounds like, you have the Sang, which would be even easier to upgrade to a better PSU
BUT! If it is possible to safely repair your stock supply which had been working properly, save the cash for some filament wink

I have a Sanguinololu for sure. I'm still messing with the opened power supply as we speak trying to find the problem, but could you guide me through removing this power supply from the board and adding a new one if I have to? Thanks.

Your problem sounds very similar to a problem I had with my PSU early on.  There used to be a rash of badly assembled PSU coming out of China.

Check this link out that outlines the problem, and the fix.  If this is like yours, then all you need is a soldering iron and an exacto knife to fix it.

Everything I have is exactly like you wrote, except the AC connector doesn't fall out. It is still firmly in place, although I do appear to have the bent PCB.

So it could be that one of the solder is broken and the other one is fine. ...

Well I'm an idiot. I tried another of the cables I had to connect the PSU to the wall outlet, and guess what? Works perfectly well.

Goes to show that it isn't always the overly complicated problem that is the real problem.
