Topic: Get gear off extruder motor shaft?

I'm real close to getting switched over to mk5 extruder and replacement carriages, but the dadgum gear on the extruder motor needs to move out a tad to line up with the hole in the top of the hot end, and I'm having insane amounts of trouble trying to unscrew the set screw. Anyone know if solidoodle stuck locktite on these things?

There is a year or so accumulation of ABS dust in the set screw socket I've been trying to clean out with a dental probe, but so far nothing I've tried has gotten it to turn at all.

Yep, they are glued in but you can get it just take your time to clean it out.  Use a little angular force to bind the wrench in the set screw while you twist.

Aargh! Maybe I'll move it well away from any meltable objects and try a heat gun on it as well. Thanks for the info.

Ye Gods! I did finally get the grub screw out (and there was indeed traces of glue on the threads), but apparently glue got on the shaft as well, the gear is every bit as immobile without the grub screw as it was with it.

Now I need to build a tiny gear puller :-).

I sprayed it with compressed air upside down to cool the motor shaft with the freezing mist.
I froze the shaft then pushed the gear toward the back of the motor. That freed it up to where it doesn't even need to be cooled if it needs moved anymore, just have to loosen the set screw.

The main issue on my machine wasn't the glue, but the burrs the set screws left on the shaft. If I had to move the gear much closer to the front of the printer I'd have to file the motor shaft.

Sand a few burrs off the shaft, and maybe I'll even be able to get it back on in the right position :-).

Nice work. I like that you know well not to apply force against the motor bearings, good job!
