Topic: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Hey all, today I got in my replacement printer from amazon. It definitely seems different than any other model I've seen though. It says 3D printer on the door and is closed by magnets instead. Interior is definitely a little different too, especially a sensor at the top of the z axis. Wiring looks different, the extruder is slightly changed and the PCB is a blue color as well. It also says Davinci 1.0A instead of just 1.0 on the screen, and I have not seen that before. Anyone have any information about this new printer? Is it just a redesign or actually a little different from a normal 1.0?

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Yea I figured that after looking at some other threads. For now, I just put it on my firewall to stop all incoming and outgoing connections.

4

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

I'm trying to find out myself. XYZ aren't very forthcoming with info on the differences.

5

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Yea I literally just saw your post too. Mine does not seem to have the blue casing like the one from the European website however. I am also located in the U.S and it does not seem to even appear on the U.S. website. My box just says da Vinci 1.0 3d Printer though like my old one.

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Very odd. I had assumed it was just a styling change. But your comment suggest otherwise. Not good. Mind is awaiting delivery.... Can we have some photos of the bits you see as different ? Maybe some of the others here might be able to pin down what they have done?

I wonder if the glass bed has been improved? Or the bearing casings? Rails etc etc ??

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Bearing casing seems to be the same. Perhaps the holes to screw them in is a little different though, can't tell. Glass bed seems... slightly different. The extruder itself looks slightly different but I can't really tell as well. Wiring is definitely different though, and it seems there are spacers in between the wheels on the rails are preinstalled as well. Z-axis movement is different. Basically a lot of little things. I'll try to get some pictures up, I'm doing a test print of a circle right now, and for all i can tell at the moment it's actually printing really really well. Much better than my old one atleast.

Edit: First time I've had something small stick to the print bed so well that I actually HAVE to wait for it to cool down and hope it pops off. Might have set the bed a little too high. I do remember it slightly hitting the bed as it did the preprint cleaning of the nozzle. (My auto-calibrate says its fine and it might just be the tape I'm using on the bed though).

8

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Cool, we await your circle. I still have time to change my order.....

9

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Circle came out a little flat on the sides but that might have to do with the belt being a little loose. Adjusted the screw and reprinting now! Also noticed that the height adjustment screws on the bed are a LOT easier to turn now. Much smoother but also way too easy to accidentally overturn. My old ones used to be fairly tight and hard to turn. This machine seems to be much quieter as well...

While I'm printing, enjoy the pictures. Is what I would say but it seems I can not post links! so just go to imgur and add this to the end for the album /a/XE7xd

My email history with xyzEU previously....

HI Richard,

Yes, you will be able to upgrade the 1.0 for PLA just changing the noozle. Price is not announced yet, we don’t have it yet to be honest.

Regards.

Thanks Fernando,

When will they be available ? - Will the 1.0 be upgradable to PLA?

Cheers!

HI Richard,

Thank you for the interest in our printers.
Well besides the different color now the main door has magnet and sensor
as the top door has. Also the blue version is compatible with PLA and
ABS. But PLA cartridges are still not available.
Any other question please let us know.

Regards.

Hi, I was about to purchase a Da Vinci 1.0 Printer and between yesterday
and today, I see the model number on the website has changed from 1.0 to
1.0A and that the plastic casing is now Blue, apart from the casing
colour change...what else is different?

12

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Hmm so then I don't know if mine is compatible with pla hahaha. It's not blue but has all the same features as the new one.

Another change I noticed: when doing calibrations I think it used to round the offset to the nearest multiple of 5 (245 245 235 would give like a 240 instead of 241.66) but now it gives it gives it just to the closest integer (I got a 238 offset).

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

How were the print outs in the end?

14

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

I've decided to 'hold' my order for my DaVinci (as it hadn't left the supplier) and wait for them to get the 1.0A. At this point we can't tell whats changed, but its worth waiting for further info, incase there is some magic bullet fixes they've done.

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Sorry to fill this thread!

Okay got some interesting confirm from someone at studica.com, who appeared to be very knowledgable and happy to answer my questions. Been digging today. wink

Differences they spoke of:
1. New Connector/Cable on Extruder, to fix the issues of the power tripping / shorting
2. Refinements on the Rails to improve stability (as spotted by krndragon)
3. Firmware refinement to improve print quality (maybe that is something to do with the calibration numbering)
4. MicroSD card instead of SD
5. Door Changes
6. PLA Compatible, new head - PLA Filament launching Mid-Jan
7. New Mainboard

Other interesting bits. the 1.1 (with Wifi) will be end of Jan / Feb, the 2.1 will be March time.

They will have stock next Thursday of the new 1.0A (as they are shipped from rotterdam). Said it was definitely worth waiting for the 1.0A if contemplating a DaVinci.

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Sorry for the late reply! Was busy for the past day or so. But the print came out pretty well. Pretty much perfect circle and all. Just slightly too small for the nickel test but that might be because of over extrusion. I'm going to be messing around with it for a bit. I will say the prints are coming out much nicer than before. It seems to slow down the first layer considerably while printing but the whole print seems to be finishing faster..
A note though: the printer crashes and shuts down when trying to print something that I have exported through my older version of xyz eare. As in the .3w file doesn't print at all unless I reopen the stl and export it again.  Also you need to update xyz ware to the latest I believe for it to even recognize the printer in the beginning.

Edit: I actually bought this model from Amazon for 399 instead of 499 too last week which was pretty sweet. And they refunded me my broken model as well!

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

The Trickster provides from his correspondence with XYZ support...

HI Richard,

Um... I bought my printer 6 months ago from Amazon and the listing clearly stated that the printer could use ABS OR PLA (as did the product specification on their website). I was happy to lend XYZ some time to develop their firmware to allow PLA, but since when would having to BUY an upgraded nozzle to achieve functionality they advertised AND continued to advertise for month and months be reasonable? If the DaVinci 1.0 requires a new nozzle to print PLA then the new nozzle should be provided free of charge.
What a bunch of crooks.

Mine is a second tev meaning it has the older board but no jumper. It to on the box and in the manual said it could print with PLA. There was however an asterisk next to PLA and I could never find a foot note anywhere for it.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

I got this snippet from a marketing brochure for the daVinci 2.0, I downloaded the PDF it's from on May 11 2014.

I never kept (or at least I can't locate) an equivalent PDF for the 1.0, although I know I saw such before I bought mine, including the note about PLA.

Sadly for our upgrade wishes, the note not only pins a date but also provides a "subject to change" escape clause.

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

This is probably a dumb question, but do reset cartridges still work in the DaVinci 1.0A? I have not moved past  1.1.G on my Davinci 1.0 and want to get a second printer.

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

so has anyone with the new machine tried printing pla then?

I'm curious to this myself. I am on 1.0.3 and just ordered the arduino to build the reseter. I hope to have it built early next week and will report back. If I can't reset and use my own filament then this thing is going back. I love it and all but there is no way I am paying twice the market price for ABS. The ROI on a more open source printer is pretty quick when you look at the total lifecycle cost of the "cheaper" davinci, but that's their business model.

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

Thinking about buying a Da Vinci and what brought me to join this forum.

I recently discovered the 1.0A version as it stated that it could also print PLA.

I very much want to hack it not wanting to get tied to cartridges etc, curious to know why the second poster said not to flash it? has the firmware been changed on the 1.0A as many do re flash the 1.0 with repetier and feel they get much better results

24

Re: New Davinci 1.0A with Firmware 1.0.3?

they have changed the firmware in the newer models and the pin-outs are different from the custom firmwares. There are currently guys working on building a new firmware for these new motherboards. Also as of now I don't think that there is any way to flash it back to any original firmware.

Da Vinci 1.0 stock firmware and stock xyzware.
3D printer Noob.
Stock ABS filaments
