Topic: Weird Print Problem.
On some sides of the prints its not smooth, well thats not the right word, so look at these pictures to see the issue. Big air holes inbetween.
Anyone know what is causing this?

It looks like layer separation(cracking).

You are having delamination. This is typically caused from lower heat than need:
*No enclosure
*Openings in the enclosure
*Lower heat settings than required
I have even seen bad filament do this (dirt/dust/moisture)
Any time this happens to me, which is rare, I change the layer height and it eliminates the problem.

+1, also try a lower infill
Thank you for the information. Also, this mostly only happens on one side.
Have you properly leveled your bed lately? May need to be more dialed in.
You could have good adhesion on the first layer, but as it builds higher and the infill cools and tugs, it is possible it is giving this result.
Dont know what machine you have, but if it is an open frame, try some cardboard sides on it to see how it will do.
Its a Solidoodle 4. Also, yes the bed is calibrated/leveled.

thanks for this post. got in a big debate over this with the devinci guys last week they all claim you need a parts fan to cool the layers as they extrude to prevent this. I said ABS has to have heated bed til finished printing so how does fast cooling upper layers keep this from happening. they have inclosures but still issues on long prints.
geez them guys where hard headed. thought I was going nuts lol. finally saw I was in the devinci forum so just left it.
I attached another photo. Still can not resolve this. Any more ideas?
1) What brand filament are you using?
2) What are your heat settings?
3) Have you modified the print speeds?
4) Have you added a fan to cool the print?
5) Have you installed a slop nut or well nut to prevent Z backlash? I had this problem constantly when first printing until I installed something. And it always happened on one side as well now that I think of it.
@n2ri- A fan is pretty much required for PLA. You will rarely have good PLA results if you have an enclosure without a cooling fan. With ABS, since it cools too fast, will require a chamber to keep the heat in. A fan for ABS is a wonderful tool is you are:
1) Printing something very small
2) Bridging gaps
3) Have harsh overhangs
You are correct that ABS needs to be heated until the end of the job. In extreme occasions while printing with ABS slurry, I needed to turn off the bed heat because the temp under the slurry began to bubble, causing warping not on the first layers, but on the current tool paths.
yep, them xyz devenci guys sware they have to cool ABS as it prints. the opposite of what we have all found. I verifide they didnt mean PLA. let em bang their hard heads on the wall I say lol

How big is this print?
if it dont have to be hollow. use honeycomb infill and it will help hold it together better while being stronger.. that what I do with cylinder shaped items not used as a container or needing to be hollow for use. more time and material is better than all the wasted attempts
Since you have an SD4, try you letting your bed get to temp then letting it heat soak for 10-15 min with the door closed for before starting larger prints.
