Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

It's not crap it is just limited in that it isn't all metal so your stuck printing PLA & ABS.  The SD hot end is also not nearly as precise as an all metal hotend because they have a much longer transition area.  Many users have had no problems with stock hot ends but if you do encounter a clog they are much more difficult to take apart than an all metal hot end such as the E3d.
In conclusion, SD (in my opinion) could for very little extra cost at least offer an all metal hot end as an optional upgrade.

+1 although we where told the new printers would have that plus other i improvements that they will not still.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

will we get any more photos this week of the press or possibly a video of it up and running?

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

I have to agree with wardjr . I have been printing with my original hot end for 11 months now. I have used 16 or so rolls of filament in that time . I had 1 clog which I was able to clear  . I had bought a spare hot end and acrylic pieces just in case but to date have not used them.  I thing they work pretty good.  I only print ABS .

SD3, RAMPS 1.4, Lawsy's carriages modified by me, 2 SSRs, E3D V6, 2 Power supplies, Independent monitoring of both power supplies (amps and volts) also extruder and bed temps, Blue Tooth connectivity, bearings in all axis & rotational points, Y axis direct drive.  Remotely controlled power box on / off . Gecko Tec build plate . Renamed FrankenDoodle

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Guys-I have been using an original  replacement SD3 hot end for 2 years without a clog.  I use only ABS, as I have found most clogs are caused by switching to pla or abs from one or another and not checking the temps, as they use different temp readings.
When I first got my SD3 I clogged it by switching back and fourth without adjusting the temperature, cause I didn't know better-operator error ha ha.  Ruined the hot end by attempting to clear clog, my bad.  Upon receiving the replacement from Solidoodle, I have not had any problems in that regard.  Thermistors are another matter though.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

What are the issues with thermistors, and how are they attached?  That is one thing that I haven't been able to figure out yet.

(I'm tempted to add a back up thermocouple and a temperature controller with a relay output as a safety device)

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

They are mounted too far from the nozzle for accurate readings, most crucially. The e3d mounts it very close to the nozzle so you have a much better idea of your actual extrusion temp. I extruder ABS at 240-245 on my e3d, and was using 215 on my stock hotend. Major difference, but it's only because of measurement error--the actual nozzle was still around 240-245.

On the SD3's the bed thermistor is mounted in a small hole in the center of the bed and held in place with Kapton tape.
Are you saying it is different on the SD4?  or just that the temp readings are off because it is too far from the surface?

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

the temp readings are off because it is too far from the surface? also SD2 used the chunk resister heater making it further off. thats why mine works best at 80c setting. never checked actual temp but pretty sure its not just 80c nor even temp all over bed. center very hot, outer edges too cool for good sticking of ABS

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

The important thing is to find a temp that works for your particular printer/needs but I have always wondered why yours (n2ri) seem so far off the norm.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Not sure it's different on the 4.... I've checked my bed with a laser thermometer and the center temp is 105, as set. It is 5 degrees colder on the edges if I'm having a good day.

That doesn't sound bad at all.
Is that with the enclosure on?

BTW, is laser thermometer accurate for shiny surfaces like aluminum?

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

I saw a question over on the Order Numbers thread and figured I'd ask it here instead.  Are the Presses still scheduled to begin shipping on Dec 5th? (Or sooner)

As well as another question. Does anyone know how many Presses have been pre-sold so far.

Happy Thanksgiving to all those it apply to. Happy Thursday to everyone else wink

No. Not even a little bit.

Some thermometers have a setting for reflective and non-reflective surfaces. I've tested it on the glass with and without tape on it and get the same reading +/- 1 degree C. My thermometer is extremely cheap and as Tim points out the readings are probably not right.

Like everything else in a Solidoodle the bed is extremely variable. Some people can't really do anything without an upgrade, some people can. A PCB would still be an improvement and I may do this before I do the solid state relay setup simply because it's cheap.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

more delays folks... dont expect to be getting the press before christmas or even new years at this rate ..

"An update on the Solidoodle Press- We are shipping approximately 200 Press printers from China to the United States at the end of this week. Unfortunately, due to unexpected production delays, they will not arrive in time for us to ship them to you starting on December 5th as we had hoped. We expect them to arrive at our Los Angeles warehouse around December 17th. Rather than send them to our office in Brooklyn and delay shipping even longer, we will begin shipping orders directly from Los Angeles the week of December 18th. We expect to ship order numbers 25863 through around 26445. As soon as we have an update on the next shipment from China we will notify you of the next arrival dates and the next range of order numbers we expect to ship. "

and on the WB

An update on the Solidoodle Workbench - We are very close to shipping the first Workbench printers. We have had some supplier issues and we are just waiting on a few parts to complete these models and start shipping them. We anticipate that we will begin shipping them by mid-December. We will provide another update on these models as soon as possible.

the piss is being taken.....

SD2 - mirror bed - e3d v6 - extruder cooling fan - no enclosure.

Posted 3 minutes later.  The mail must have just arrived.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

This stinks so bad, im all for the wait and quality of a product. but what i don't get is why wouldent they have expected this from the first place? Also if Sam is in the factory inspecting units ( Solidoodle Press) as they leave or are built then why cant we get more videos , or a tour of the printer? Or even a longer time lapse video of a complete print on the press? I just sent them an email hopefully i get word back.
