Topic: swapping with Printrboard?

While multimeter testing my Solidoodle Rev E motherboard on my Solidoodle 4, I shorted it and need to replace it.

Solidoodle Rev E seems kind of expensive for me, the online shipping calculator is broken and the Support is kind of slow.

Can I just get a Printrboard and use that? Can I just swap with a Printrboard and use that without any modification? Anyone here done that? The wiki mentions these differences: wiki.solidoodle.com/update-firmware

While the microUSB instead is not a big issue for me, these I don't know what even mean:

Addition of two 12V power taps
5.5/2.5 barrel connector for power supply
Replaced the resonator with a crystal

And if yes, where should I get one? I can only find printrboard Rev F on PrintrBot store and don't know if that is interchangeable.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

Don't buy the Printrboard if you can afford a little more. RAMPS, RUMBA, or Sanguinololou are superior to the Printrboard.
The only thing I liked about the Printrboard is the barrel connector for the power. That's it. Other boards are easier to flash firmware and more dependable.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I was satisfied with this similar board, and now I just want to replace it with another one which will screw in its place the same way, will connect the same way, and not require anything more from me, except installing firmware.

I know the reasons why you would suggest the other boards.

I'll need my question answered though.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

Sorry, what link do you mean?

Again, this wiki pages talks about their differences: wiki.solidoodle.com/update-firmware
The stock one is called "Solidoodle Rev E" and the other one "Printrboard Rev E".
printrbot store only has Rev F.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

Like I said, in the wiki page I posted there are the differences mentioned between the Solidoodle Rev E and Printrboard Rev E. Obviously Solidoodle is based on it, but like the page says there are few differences, which I've reposted here. I don't understand what the differences listed are and what they change, that is why I made this topic.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

For plug and play swappable purposes the only thing that would matter is if the power connectors were different.  I believe they both have a barrel connectors but based on the OP they may be of different size.  If what you really want is the exact same board you might post a want ad in buy/sell/trade there are lots of users that have upgraded and would be happy to sell their old Printerboards.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

So "Addition of two 12V power taps" and ''Replaced the resonator with a crystal" is not an issue then?
If the power connector is different size/type, that isn't an issue for me.
So is the microUSB port instead of D.
Every other difference might matter.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

Two additional power taps just means they've added some pins to the board for accessories like additional fans.  So as long as it has the same footprint and the micro USB cable and power connector aren't an issue you should be good to go.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

I would like to reiterate that there are many other boards that are better and cheaper that will also work.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

One problem, where are the "screws" for adjusting the VREFs?
http://printrbot.com/shop/printrboard-rev-f/

And this looks nice, too bad only says it compatible with Rev D. http://printrbot.com/shop/power-dongle/

I also found a printrboard on ebay but it doesn't specify what revision it is.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

And sorry if this is a stupid question, but LED pins seem to be missing in the Printrboard?

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

I believe that's a thing Solidoodle added. You can splice them into any +12V power source. Wire it into the fan bundle is my suggestion.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

any of those 2 additional 12v power taps will work just fine.

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

Thanks.

Which are the additional power taps? The ones named "EXP1" and "EXP2" in this photo?
i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NzY4WDEwMjQ=/z/GEoAAOxykMpTJWtz/$_57.JPG

Better buy one which has those as pins so I will be able to just plug and not cut and solder anything.

I guess which Revision it is doesn't matter?

That links to a REV C and I don't see the extra power taps.  I would ask support at printerbot  for a schematic of that board.

The EXT1 and EXT2 in my photo?

Re: swapping with Printrboard?

Those are not for fans.
The extra pins look to be right at the power connector but it is hard to tell from that photo.
