Topic: Heater erratic, burnt pin, is this a dead board?

My bed heater just dropped dead in the middle of a print, I checked the connections and it seemed to come back... then failed again...
checked the pins to discover one is nice and crispy.  The connector was fused to the pin so it was a struggle to disconnect it.  Please see attached images. Does this mean I need a new main board?

Update:
So I cleaned off the crispy pin and checked the voltage... around 12 volts.  The heating element looks normal at 2 Ohms resistance.

I just plugged everything back in and it seems to be heating like normal.  Looking into some of the suggested replacement mobos from others who have run into this issue.  If this were as simple as an electrical short, shouldn't the symptoms be a lot worse?  I am guessing the erratic heating was due to a lousy connection from the fried pin... but why did it short in the first place?

Replace both connectors and you will be good.

I'm in the same situation now, I'm replacing my board with a rumba.  I'd much rather have a higher amp capacity component there.  In the near future I will just make it a relay with separate supply.

Bowden SD3, Rumba, E3D hotend, Mk5 with RtRyder changes, Direct drive Y axis and bearings, GT2 pulleys and braided fishing line, Lawsy linear bearing conversion, M3 Z screw.

That connector isn't designed for what Solidoodle's pushing through it.

Thanks everyone!  I will make the fixes before risking further damage.  Looking into the Rumba with the 1/32 microstepping option.  But like my old car, I'll probably just drive this board until it won't drive anymore and then do the upgrade!

1 pin being nice and crispy = you probably had no short, just an open circuit. Since the heatbed is a not-crazy inductive load (i.e, mostly non-inductive), it was unlikely to have killed anything.

So you just need to replace the connector, basically.


Solidoodle had the two-pronged problem of using connectors not rated for the current, and using low-quality versions of them. They may have been ok if they used the proper quality connectors, or just cheaper connectors rated for the current.

Granted some of the connectors on the solidoodle I can't tell that they're bad quality, so maybe some of them were well-sourced.  And at this point everyone has a different motherboard so IDK if I'mtalking about the same board as you.
