Topic: Board bed heater burned up.

Well, looks like I'm in the market for a new board.  Fired up the printer to test some things with what I've done recently, nothing that would effect the board mind you, and I get a nice burnt smell as the bed warms up.

I was going to order a smoothieboard for my larger format build that I'm working on, but it seems I will have to postpone it for this one.  Should I go ahead and install the smoothie onto the doodle, or get a similar board to replace it with?

I love the rumba. It's a great board. It's tough (can't destroy it no matter what dumb stuff I do), it offers several extruder stepper ports, bed power and main power are separated, and the fans are only on when needed which is nice. Love the thing. Get the DRV8825 version for 1/32nd microstepping. It also gives you screw terminals when it matters-no more passing bed heat/extruder heat through molexes or using the barrel plug power supply design. I power mine with a supermight, which I run at 13.5v to heat the bed a bit faster but not risk cooking my fans or LEDs. The rumba supports up to 36v if I recall.

You can also print from SD relatively easily if you get the LCD controller.

That might sound like a plan there.  The extra micro stepping will be nice. SD card would save me some failed prints,  in sure everyone knows how stable windows is ha.

I'm actually powering mine with a CPU power supply I had laying around, i know they are well regulated.

I've been looking at it the past hour or so, they have it laid out really nice!  Tomorrow it seems I will be ordering the rumba and the xxl LCD screen.  That will fix my random blobbing from pauses in commands from the PC.

Where did you guys buy your rumbas from?  reprapdiscount.com?  I found them half off at aliexpress.

I got mine on RepRapDiscount. It doesn't really matter where you get it (I don't think), but make sure you drop the extra cash for the DRV8825 version, the microstepping is worth it.

If you get it from RRD they throw in a lot of extras such as labeled connectors and a screwdriver for adjusting VREF. FYI, your existing connectors won't fit most things on the rumba--I sanded down several connectors to get them to fit, and used screw terminals when possible. Soon I'll go back and fix my wiring smile

Yeah I'm not sure i really trust aliexpress...  I'm just going to order everything from rrd.  It would have been awesome to get two of these for the price of one so I can have one for my build.  That just seemed to good to be true.

I would say just go with RRD. I just looked it up on Aliexpress and the only RUMBA that resembles mine is $250. The others may either be older models (?) or knockoffs. Like you said...too good to be true.

Great place to buy jeans, maybe not so for intricate electronics.

Cool man. Like I said more than happy to help you get it going. There are some firmware intricacies and some tricks with the endstops. Shoot me a pm when you get it. Wardjr helped me set mine up so its time I pass on the favor to the community.

Do you have a Supernight or power supply with a couple separate +12V rails? Recommend that for great success with the rumba.

Yeah, I'm using an atx psu I had laying around.  Hopefully I can get her going no problems, but if need be of course I'll be stopping by here!

Seeing as you've got an ATX power supply, next step is adding a raspberry pi with octoprint as a web interface, and powering it off the 5V. smile

does the Rumba have plug pins for print cooling gcode operated fan? and does it handle the bed heater also?

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

I would like to add pi and Octo Grob.  Although that's entirely new territory for me. 

N2ri, the rumba supports both of those features

monk: Octoprint was super easy: just have to image the sd card with the "octopi" image, plug it all in (sd card, printer, power and network), and then type the ip address (find that via your network router) into a browser and it's ready to roll! Highly recommended.

That's definitely awesome, I'm wiring up the Rumba now.  I'll look more into octopi soon.  My business seems to be getting attention before I get my commercial printer so I need my SD3 on top of it's game!  I don't feel comfortable leaving it print overnight or while I'm at work, so a way to monitor it remotely is very appealing.  I really need to put all this in my garage and build a fire proof enclosure around the entire thing, maybe a walk in room that's fireproof.
