Topic: Dual side fans, now with ducts

Update 11/3/14: I made changes to this design and have uploaded them to thingiverse : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:527337

I've found out quick how much cooling PLA needs for overhangs.  So with my rapid prototyping machine, *huge grin*, I went through 4 iterations of an underneath fan mount for Lawsy's linear bearing carriage.  I'm using two 30mmx10mm fans.  I just started printing with it as I'm writing this so if any problems arise, I will update here.

It takes the E3D with stock power supply to stabilize temp after second layer about 1 min, then it's steady from there.  The fans come on after layer two full 100%.  I'm going to have to run PID's with the fans running.  It prints just beautifully actually but its fluctuating +-3 degrees.

Success!  Overhangs no longer cause issue, at least not with this tulip print!  I'm curious as to how well ABS will print with this setup.  Unfortunately I'm basically out of ABS.  That test will happen another day!

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

nice job!.  any problems with the wiring?  It looks a little cramped where the thermistor and heating cartridge are.  Did you run the fans to the prntrboard or the the sanguinolo?  Details man, details! smile

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

No problems with the wiring at all.  I have them in parallel of course and ran back to the printrboard.   The left fan mount I modeled to bend around the heater and thermistor wiring.

These are the fans, at 5.1 cfm they definitely move some air:

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

What pins did you hook up to on the board?  Are you controlling from Slic3r?  I have a SD4 and all the fans are always on.  There is no control.

6

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

There weren't pins there, just holes for them labeled fan.  It sits just to the right of the thermistor headers.  I had to change the firmware pinout but it works great and is gcode controllable.

The only issue I found was the fans would turn off about every other layer, but I'm going to try the fans always on setting in slic3r.

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

I have went back into this design and added ducts.  It really helps to have the air flow directed at the point of extrusion.  Everything has clearance on my machine and I don't lose any build space.  If anyone would like files I can throw them up on thingiverse.

I would appreciate sharing the files.
Is this Lawsy carriage or MK5 compatible?

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

Yeah it's for lawsy's carriage.  The arms mount to the bolts holding the bearing bracket.  I'll throw the files onto thingiverse.

clearance? how? where is the X carriage motor?

Just confirmed this today...the fans have a low enough profile to fit underneath endstops, carriages, and shouldn't crash into the frame.

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

the motor on left X carriage is no more than 1/4 inch higher than print bed at all times during print and only like 1 inch from hotend when its all the way left on my SD2 SD3 must be same as it has larger bed same as frame is larger.

are fans 25mm? nevermind just saw link to specs duh lol. 30mm

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

even though 6x6 is big enough for my printing seems the SD3 would be better for adding all the good mods and keep the 6x6 bed.

one question on fans, I have the cooling fan that holds onto acryilic puzzle screws with magnets. can this be modified to be used on the Lawsy mk5?

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

Azerate, would you mind further explaining the change you requested on thingiverse?  You wanted a thicker bottom of the print, as in the part on the build plate or the curved section which is bottom when its mounted?

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

I meant the latter...the curved section which faces down when mounted.

Sorry I wasn't very clear smile

I figured ha, is it too thin?  Ill fool with it and bulk it up a bit for you.  What extrusion width are you printing at, .7?

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

Here you go, I made it the width of your extrusion, although slicer wants to make that wall all by itself.  I'm not sure if this will fix your problem but just holler back at me with results and we'll go from there!

Re: Dual side fans, now with ducts

I have went back into this design again, PLA just does not like overhangs.  These are quite a bit more durable, which could be bad if they run into something.  The outlet is quite a bit larger, a little over double the previous.  I noticed in testing an improvement in the overhangs from the previous ducts a decent amount.  Clearance is still fine.  These will print as oriented in the file without supports.
