Topic: out sourced 3D printing customers
have not seen a topic for this yet.
I have samples on display at a local hobby shop with contact info for 3D printing. had a call last week a guy wanted a quote on designing and printing a light weight (PVC) pipe flange to use for stanchions at train shows. (several types on Thingaverse already) I sliced a sample and it would take 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours to print depending on settings. now this same item can be bought at Home depot for under a dollar. a steel threaded one for like $5. how does somebody think "hey I can have 20 of these 3D printed in a few mins for less"?
seems 90% of the world has no clue how a 3D printer can be used to make items NOT available anywhere else for any price. or make an R&D sample model or at least something that cost several dollars or have shipped around the world.
most stl files I see on thingaverse are available at 99 cent stores and take more plastic than that plus time.
I only make items that are not avail when needed or that can sell for more than cost of printing. yet I have a library of over 7K stl files (likely never print most but better to have and not need than need and not have. plus I have found if ya dont download and save things off the web when available. they become unavailable for one reason or another soon.
