Re: PET

I was wondering about this before with t-glase because it is pretty much PET from what I can tell.

I have been saving my bad t-glase prints to send to you Ggalisky.

Re: PET

There are many, many varieties of PET. Taulman didn't call Coca-cola and ask for their leftovers, I'll tell you that.

Agree. I do have access to the same stuff they make the coke bottles from though.

Re: PET

I am going to try some soda bottles, and I am also going to get a pound of virgin PET pellets, and see how that goes. Any plastic item that has a recycle symbol with a 1 on the bottom is either PET, PETE, or some form of PET. I do not believe the soda bottles will work well since there additives in that plastic. (Elmoret helped me find that out with his google fu)

3D Systems claim that they are doing that

Nope, 3D Systems claims 1/3rd of their filament is Coke bottles. The rest has a drastically different chemical composition to make up for the PET variant used in coke bottles.

Blow molding and 3D printing aren't very similar processes.

But kudos for googling!

Re: PET

Taulman says:

If you have a “struder”, you can actually mix in 12% of the total weight in discarded clear water bottles.  Please keep in mind, that the polymer used in most water bottles, has a slightly higher melt temp and that adding them to the mix, may increase print temp a few degrees.

Before they blow mold the bottle they injection mold the the initial plastic "slug".

25% is what they are saying on the website.

Hmm, I thought it was 33% at one point. Maybe I remembered wrong.

Thanks! I look forward to crushing up and extruding your failed prints smile

Re: PET

I tried virgin PET pellets (they look almost like natural ABS, white instead of clear) in my Filastruder.  It didn't work.  The pellets made it to the end of the barrel without melting down.

As I increased the temperature (I think I made it to 220 before I stopped), I got some extrusion -- about 4" -- and then it slowed down and the plastic got sticky inside the pipe and stopped extruding.

Re: PET

At 230 PET does not flow very well. At 240 it flows very well, but it is impossible to get anything bigger 0.05mm.

Same results on my end.
