Topic: E3D and SD4 question

hello, i would like to replace my SD4 hotend with an E3d v6 hotend. is this possible on my solidoodle 4 with the new all metal extruder?  if not can i make some parts to make it possible, or what are my other options?

i want to be able to print nylon at temps higher than the SD4 hot end will allow.

thanks!

Re: E3D and SD4 question

thank you , that is good info.

But, it does not tell me if the E3D V6 will fit on the new all metal SD4 Extruder?  Does anyone know if it will fit?

Re: E3D and SD4 question

If you print or buy an MK-5 that was adapted for the v6 you'll be fine.

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat
3-SD3's & a Workbench all fully enclosed, RH-Slic3r Win7pro, E3D V6, Volcano & Cyclops Hot End
SSR/500W AC Heated Glass Bed, Linear bearings on SS rods. Direct Drive Y-axis, BulldogXL
Thanks to all for your contributions

Re: E3D and SD4 question

Re: E3D and SD4 question

This is a good one....affordable as well smile
And yes. It is recommended to upgrade the PSU, though it is possible to run the E3D on the stock PSU for a little while.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: E3D and SD4 question

I've been running the E3Dv6 on stock power supply for a few hundred hours now, but YMMV since it's pushing it close to its limit.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

Almost true, but you are missing a few more things.  The SD4 extruder design is different, not just in the lower aluminum mount, but also the upper portion too.

I just tried using Lawsy's mk5 design on my SD4 only to find I did not have the same extruder bearing, bolt, or spring as the SD2 & SD3 guys. Since I had already destroyed my carriages/ x-axis guides... There was no turning back.  Right now the printer is a Frankenstein but seems to be working with some PLA temp parts I made on my Printrbot.

As soon as I have it all sorted I will upload my SD4 mods for the MK5 & e3d v6.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

Here is the build so far...

http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/ii601/zlagger/29B788B9-2232-41BC-91CC-A0D70A5B5587.jpg

Upper extruder is stock with 2 turns cut from the spring to shorten it.  The lower section is PLA, but as you can see the ABS version is just about done.

I will mess with the design for us SD4 guys and post STLs in the forum.

Oh yeah BTW the lower extruder design is from here http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:431363
Works great for the E3D V6

Re: E3D and SD4 question

thanks guys, i just printed that mount last night. my E3dV6 will be here tomorrow. now i just have to get my head wrapped around updating the firmware on it.

as far as power supplies, i have some extra pc power supplies 360w 36A that i have converted into bench power supplies, so i may give one of them a try to start.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

I'm in the same boat about the firmware.  Most of the information is for the solidoodle 2,3.  It's not super clear.  Trying to choose between updating and just switching to a Ramps 1.4 board...

Re: E3D and SD4 question

i just followed the link at the top of this post and it worked perfectly on my SD4 Printer board Rev. E

just did it 2 hours ago.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

Glad to hear it worked for you.  Maybe I will give it a go, just to keep things simpler for now.
I started work on the extruder and have an updated file that you might like better.

The Lower mount now incorporates a pin to hold the spring in place.

I should have a few more updates soon.  Work was busy today.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

oh i like that mount!!

how does it compare to this one? do you think the retaining clip from this one will work with it.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

It's the same, just cleaned it up in solidworks.  The clip will work perfect.

I will add the retainer and the snap-off piece that makes it easier to print tomorrow if I have time.  It took a while to draw the model for the hotend, but I will be doing an adjustable top soon, followed by a bottom mount extruder fan that won't waste space by side or front mounting it

i tried printing one last night and it does not print correctly for me, it tries to print in 2 pieces. I tried running it through netfab and it comes back with unfixable errors in the free version.

anyone else experience this?

Ok,

Here is the corrected file.  Sorry about that.

Added the snap off support for better printing.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

when i slice it with slic3r it slices as 2 parts.

the curved portion that holds the e3d in the center of the part is missing once sliced.

Re: E3D and SD4 question

I tried slicing in Repetier with Cura as the slicer and it works perfect.  Same thing with the standalone version of Cura.

How come the stock PSU isn't adequate?  I am going to buy the one you recommended but was just curious smile  Also, do you or anyone else know of a good fan mount to cool the tip so that i might be able to bridge larger gaps while printing?  Was looking at this one http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:839620

Re: E3D and SD4 question

The stock PSU is maxed out assuming it operates at its rated max output.  Which as it turns out it doesn't.
As for the fan mount goes if you want to do bridging you will want a separate G-code controlled fan.  I am not a fan of combined always on fans they usually create more problems than they solve.
