Topic: Set screw size?

Hi, so I've stripped out the setscrews on the collars for the back rod. What size/length are they? Any suggestions on some nice and strong ones? Thanks.

Re: Set screw size?

If you have stripped out the threads, new set screws will probably not help you as it is likely the collar threads that are stripped.  Bring the collar(s) and screws to your local hardware store, get the next size up screw tap and matching set screws.  The hardware store associates will assist you.  You can then re-thread the existing holes.

BTW, You don't need to stick with metric, either...eg. if the original set screw is M3, then step up to 6-32.

Also, make sure the new set screws are the hardened steel alloy version.  They are usually a black oxide finish.

Nah, I've stripped out the hexagonal part, not the threads.

well you can go to a hardware store or home center and try to match the old one.
or measure up the old one.

a chart like this one helps a lothttp://littlemachineshop.com/Reference/ … lSizes.pdf

Not to be smart but you do not mention what printer you have that could be helpful information.
That said my soiidoodle 4 Has 3/8 Z axis  guide rods and the collar screw is 1/4 -20 x 3/16 McMaster car part  # 91375A532  $7.52 for a pack of 50.
You have to love a machine that is half metric standard and half  SAE/ Imperial.

I am! Not sure where to get them local because haven't been able to find them online on the sites of hardware stores near me, but they're cheap, so I guess it's not a big deal if I order online and get the wrong size.

Re: Set screw size?

You need to visit the local stores. they are not going to list every screw size on there web page.
the other option is purchasing an assortment kit.

ACE Hardware is a good option...they usually have a very wide assortment of Imperial and Metric.

Re: Set screw size?

Most home centers have something like this in the hardware department.

http://store.gsfasteners.com/images/p21/gs_bolt2.jpg

these can also be purchased under several forms and under several brand names such as thread Checker thread ID  and thread detective and probably a few more. So if you get to the store identify the thread and they do not have what you need you at least know what you need and can order on line.
If it is in fact 1/4 20 that is a pretty common size for SAE hardware
