Topic: 'struder noob Beta unit build. Problem solving etc etc

Morning comrades.

Having a slightly odd time of doing the initial purge on the beta unit I acquired.
At first it was coming out clear(after getting through the colourant that was present) with the occasional dark fleck or weird artefact, but it seems now to be far more burnt or in some parts completely black or grey.
I'm running around 155 degree's as it appears to produce the most consistent diameter so far.

So here's the burnt chunky badness

And here's what it looked like just before the big chunks started appearing

Just wondering if this is normal or if I'll have to clean out whatever is causing the burnt stuff?

Cheers!

It should purge itself, and then the melt filter nozzle should catch anything solid.

Excellent smile
About another 4 hours to go on the purge, starting to clearer now.

Oh and I found some muffler wrap after visiting far too many local hardware stores... Autobarn stocks a few different kinds.

Don't worry, if I get bored of making super cheap filament I'll send it over >:D

Still need to rig up a proper guide....

I think that guide is awesome... I like your "get-to-itivness"
Happy to see you have it working.  Now If you just had a filawinder, Hmmm.

Replaced my rather hackslash fan holder.. still rather hackslash but it's the best I could do with what I've got sitting around, and apparently it works rather well.
Getting seemingly consistent diameter between 1.29 to 1.31mm
My only current queries are about the rather disturbing noise that one can hear towards the end of this clip and the sound from the motor varying a lot as if the voltage isn't a constant even though it's plugged straight into the wall. This seems to coincide with the 'out' light clicking off and on.

I'm assuming both are probably not healthy...

That's all that matters!

That's good. Did you predry the PLA? If so, you may need to drill out the nozzle to 1.8 or 1.9mm. Work your way up slowly.

Not normal. Check the thrust bearing and gearbox internals for damage. Lubricate thrust bearing. If noise persists, cross your fingers and hope for the best. I can get you a new gearmotor if needed.

Normal. The power supply voltage only varies a few percent, but the human ear is very sensitive to frequency shifts so a change of a few percent in motor speed is audible. It makes a very small impact on filament diameter, nearly negligible. If you're pursuing extremely tight tolerances, you can move them to separate supplies. Even the best 6 amp supplies dip when a 3 amp load is dumped on them.

Re: 'struder noob Beta unit build. Problem solving etc etc

Excellent!
Yeah, I dried it in the oven for about 2 hours at 80 and have had it sat on a heater most of the time in a plastic container packed with every desiccant I've ever acquired tongue

Right, I'll run it for a while today just to make sure it's still actually working then I'll take it apart to check for issues.
I assume the screws on the back(?) of the gear motor are how to access it's guts?

As to drilling, yeah, I'll have to find a drill press somewhere but that is the plan.
Though I'll try lowering my temp down by 10 to see if I can't get it a little bigger without having to drill.

Ok, assuming that this is actually the thrust bearing:

What kind of lubrication should I be using? I've got a can of the lithium grease for the printer, would that do?
Oh and does one have to remove the bearing to lube it?

As to the gearmotor, here it is: Not sure if there's anything amiss as I've never looked inside one that was performing properly.

I did see this, what looks to be a wear mark, perhaps the noise was the bearing rotating against it?
http://i.imgur.com/LoyY7F7.jpg

And just a pic of everything so we can be sure I'm not missing everything.

Re: 'struder noob Beta unit build. Problem solving etc etc

All seems good form the photos. You'd be looking for anything missing teeth or obviously amiss in the gearbox. The grease you have on hand is fine for the trust bearing, and it does nto need to be removed to be lubricated.

Wear mark on the wood is not a problem.

Re: 'struder noob Beta unit build. Problem solving etc etc

Looks like the lube did the job! big_smile No more evil noises since I applied it about 2 hours ago.
Thanks for the quick responses, Tim, I'd be lost in a sea of unknown mechanical terms without you tongue

Here's another clip for proof of life.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9SIwMXiL0U

Do you think I'd be able to print with 1.3mm filament? Or would it be best to stop making the stuff and find someone who can drill out the hole for me?
The other thing I'm curious about is swapping the wood for some form of extrusion like mitsumi or something.
I was a guitar nerd for long enough to realise just how damned annoying wood can be.

Re: 'struder noob Beta unit build. Problem solving etc etc

1.3 probably won't feed well. You can drill the hole with a hand drill, no need for a drill press.

Folks have used extrusion:

I have over 1800 hours on a wooden base, horizontal unit though.

Re: 'struder noob Beta unit build. Problem solving etc etc

Ah, okie dokie then.
Off to bunnings I go tomorrow for drill bits.

I know it can be run with the original wood, I guess it's just my paranoia that says metal would be more logical.
Either way I've still got a Filawinder to order and setup so that's all way ahead of me anyway.

None of the hardware stores within reasonable distance stocks 1.7 or 1.8mm drill bits.... Surprise surprise....

I got a jewelers drill set from amazon. It came with drill bits from 1-2mm in .1mm intervals.
