Topic: Bumps or blobs in layers

ABS on a SD3 with E3D hot end & upgraded power supply.

I'm getting this (see photo) in my prints. Not sure where to go for this one, any thoughts?

Re: Bumps or blobs in layers

Not terribly good at analyzing photos yet, but I have had minimal issues by:
- Leveling the bed
- Calibrating the extruder steps
- Measuring the wall thickness on a single walled cube - looking for about .48mm on a .4 nozzle

Have you leveled the bed to the nozzle by about a dollar bill's thickness?

Also, could be over extruding a bit...what is your extrusion multiplier set to?

Re: Bumps or blobs in layers

Yeah, I think it's leveling + extrusion multiplier. The steps are calibrated, and this has all been done before. But haven't printed anything in a couple of months, always fun to try and remember what the hell you did to it last!

Yeah...it's strange, but you can have an SD leveled perfectly; and a few days later, it's off again...that's why I got into my routine of leveling fairly regularly...if I ever upgrade to a RAMPS or RUMBA on the SD, I'll invoke the auto-leveling system...one of these days!

Re: Bumps or blobs in layers

Yeah, really want to rework the bed, that new SoliTouch feature looks pretty hot.

Re: Bumps or blobs in layers

Are you sure that isn't an extreme case of Moire?  When's the last time you adjusted the VREF?
That seems like it's a rather systematic pattern.

Re: Bumps or blobs in layers

Never I guess is the answer to that question. Any pointers there, just play with the trimpot until it smooths out?

Re: Bumps or blobs in layers

That's one way to do it...or if you have a multimeter:

BTW, if you can find a ceramic mini-screwdriver to adjust the vref pots, use that.  If not, be very careful not to short anything out...very easy to blow a stepper driver!

Re: Bumps or blobs in layers

Okay, did the multimeter adjustments, ~.25v on the E and ~1v on the XYZ. Looks like that was the trick so far, E was at ~.89, XYZ were a little hot too, ~1.2ish.

Somehow I missed this adjustment before, good to know!
