Topic: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

...At the end of each layer the extruder is travelling to the opposite side of the print and coming back to it's starting point for no reason whatsoever, then continuing the print. It is doing this for each circuit of each layer. Slow and unnecessary. It wasn't doing this before I started fiddling with the settings and don't know which one to change to stop this?

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

must have one of these checked in box for Slic3r setting used;

dont cross paths/perimeters
or
do outside perimeters 1st

those are for fine detail prints so as not to bump a small part loose

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

I just checked and I don't have either of those checked.

I do have these checked though in the same section:
Extra perimeters if needed
Detect thin walls
Detect bridging perimeters

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

I bet a dollar it is a GCode hiccup.
Have you messed with any of that lately?

You should still have the "default" Slicing profile which should get you back on track...then you can compare the settings individually what went wrong.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

yeah the settings you said wont cause that. like Azerate said hopefully you still have the default settings to compare to. we save any modified settings as dif name that way you keep the baselines for reference. bet I got couple dozen settings saved in my Slic3r at least due to many factors requiring tweaks. any re-install of slic3r puts defaults back in while usually leaving any you made, but I found where RH keeps the settings in a folder and saved a backup for piece of mind lol. everything I install or use for my 3D printing is kept in a folder along with others I made for all my personal stuff to backup weekly for that ever looming "some day never" so I can always start over complete ;^) had those days b4 and glad I planned ahead.

PS like a PC joke my kid heard years ago "you know why the Devil kept loosing all his files when power failed but Jesus didnt? cause Jesus saves" LOL

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

Thanks for the excellent suggestions so far. I've found a profile that works and I'm going to start with that as my new baseline.

I'm working with PLA and found that warping upwards was a problem I was having but since opening up the SD4 case and getting more air through it, PLA results are looking very nice.

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

I'm getting somewhere. I've noticed that when I select 3 as the value in Slic3r > Layers and perimeters > Vertical shells this starts the pointless back and forth with no extrusion problem again. Fine so when I select a lower value, the back and forth stops but then I'm left with an inner and outer perimeter wall (I'm making a cylinder) and between the two is a space which is leaving it fragile and it needs to be filled. How can I force this to make a 3 layer wall without the back and forth going on?

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

That comes down to the design and wall thickness of what your trying to print.  If you don't want any infill but you are looking for a solid part?  Try designing the wall thickness as multiples of your extrusion width then set number of perimeters to match.
So if you have an extrusion width of .42 and want say 4 perimeters design at a thickness of 1.68 smile

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

Well I scale my design and was previously able to force 3 layers in the wall but when I reset my profiles because of the problems I was having earlier in this post I lost the one that did the job as needed.

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

You might check when you save that profile if 3 perimeters is actually staying as 3.  I have had that happen and to get it to change just change it to 6 and save it and then back to 3 and save again.  This seems to happen if I only change it by 1 perimeter.  The other thing is look at your extrusion width and see if you can make sense of the dimensions your trying to actually print.  Maybe you had it at .48 and now it's at .42 or something like that.

+1 I scale tiny too and parimiters/walls some times have to be set at 1-2 even using layer thickness of 1 and the thin walls are solid due to being so thin on the file. that aimless moving is just going through mations til next doable line in G-code which can lead to thin walls being skipped

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

I've been able to specify 3 layers in the walls successfully but then the extruder darts between one side of the print and back to the other at in between layers for no reason whatsoever and creates quality issues. Any ideas?

Re: Which Slic3r setting is doing this...

yep thats when it skips layers walls thinner than 3 since its basiclly told to only print min of 3 so it ignores thinner walls. may not notice some missing but others you will thats why the strange prints
