Re: Show off your Cases

Awesome looking cases adrian and tealvince.

Just a note though: Acrylic and plexiglass is usually highly flammable. A better choice in the future (considering the attention fire hazard has been lately) is polycarbonate which is flame resistant.

Re: Show off your Cases

aye - but I'm not entirely cavalier - do note the red bottle with yellow head next to the case wink

Re: Show off your Cases

I wrote plexiglass (incorrectly) as a generic term but I don't actually remember what I used as it is recut from the previous case.  I got it from Lowe's so it is either acrylic or polycarbonate.  If I decide to remake the top I will definitely get new polycarbonate; til then at the right you can see a bit of the automatic halon extinguisher that I got to place somewhere above the printer while printing.

Re: Show off your Cases

Yeah, I am planning to get one as well. I pretty much stopped unattended printing since. Once I get mine shipped and mounted, I can go back to 8 hour jobs over-night.

Re: Show off your Cases

Cool to see all of the different concepts.  Finally got around to fixing up my enclosure last weekend

Re: Show off your Cases

tealvince, that is awesome.

I have not posted here in a while.  We have an early SD3, and I have pretty much worn it out after 10 spools or so.  We bought a QU-BD RXL and have suffered all manner of issues (4 months to get it, broken when it arrived, rookie design issues that are too numerous to mention) but I have finally worked out all the bugs and it is awesome.  But I would not recommend it.  Good idea but really truly lousy company.  I think the principal means well, he is just in way over his head and does not have the right tools to swim.  A common story in this business.

Regardless, here is the RXL enclosure.  Aluminum L TIG welded together with acrylic sides.  The box has to be proud of all the sides since some bits of the machine extend beyond the frame (QU-BD does not think enclosures are a necessity - we in this forum know better of course).

Now I can go through the SD3 and upgrade the worn out extruder, bearings and bed heater (and rebuild the enclosure - using a heat gun to speed up the bed heating process will warp acrylic sheet - DOH!).

Re: Show off your Cases

This is my enclosure / touchscreen mod I completed some time ago and never had the chance to show it off. It is powered by a modified Octoprint server running on a dedicated Raspberry Pi. A relay is also connected to the RPi so I can turn the machine on/off directly from software.

Re: Show off your Cases

This is all wonderful work, quite inspiring.  I strayed away from ABS since I never got around to finishing my case.  I think that will be the icing on the cake, abs handles small areas curling well.

Bowden SD3, Rumba, E3D hotend, Mk5 with RtRyder changes, Direct drive Y axis and bearings, GT2 pulleys and braided fishing line, Lawsy linear bearing conversion, M3 Z screw.

@Grob,

Why the dual SSR's?

Re: Show off your Cases

Hehe thanks guys!

One SSR is for the enclosure heater (runs off 240V AC), which up until now had it's own PID controller and sat in the bottom of the case (what z range are you talking about?? tongue). That's going to end up on one of the wall panels, and controlled by the rumba so I can turn it off when the print is done (currently sort of prevents overnight printing, don't like leaving handmade heaters on overnight...).

The other is for the bed heater (potentially) - but at the moment it's just the stock bed and the rumba should be more than capable of handling that. Thought I'd stick the SSR in for space reasons for now, in case I want to change the bed in the future (e.g. to a 240V one).

You'll notice I've only just started doing the wiring, as I've been procrastinating from chopping all the stock wiring off to put longer lengths in (needs to reach under the case now, rather than just to the back).

Nice!  I need to look at an enclosure heater as well going forward...
