Topic: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

Hello,

We have been extruding plastics since 1992. We recently decided to turn our focus to 3D printing filament. We have had great reviews and offer a highly precise quality product. Below is a summary from one of our founders:

Marlon Inc. (Precision 3D Filament) has been extruding precision filament since 1992. We specialize in PVC extrusion used by PVC Spiral Supply for manufacturing of plastic spiral coils. We’ve perfected extruding ABS for Japan and Europe due to their unacceptance of PVC. We own and operate 12 plastic extruders and one compounding and pelletizing extruder with multiple lines. Marlon Inc. has the capacity to process 5 million pounds of material per year.

We have perfected PLA filament with such precision, our close tolerances are unmatched in the market today. With our quality, customer service and quick turn-around, we are in position to become the premier 3-D printer filament manufacturer in the USA.

Please visit our Facebook page to learn more about us and our product. We think we have some of the highest quality filament on the market today.

PVC Spiral Supply is the trade name for the business; and the actual PVC Spiral Supply (at the same Boise address) dates back as far as 1993...

But hey, everyone has days when their google-fu is weak.

I'm not vouching for the quality of their product - I'm in Australia so unlikely to ever buy any as their shipping will kill me no doubt - but they are a legit business it would appear and their story checks out through multiple sources.

Yep Tin Falcon we are a legit company. Hopefully you give us a chance.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

OK ying and yang here. On one hand after being an admisrator of a hobby Machining  site for 7 years or so I detest spammers and inherently distrust people that promote there product on the first post.
On the other hand I am new to 3d printing have a made /assembled in USA machine believe we need more manufacturing in the USA and am looking for quality affordable Fiament.

And I expect this site is new, guess the googlrbots have not found it yet?
so this is you?  http://precision3dfilament.com/

and I expect this is your product as well.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

Thank you for the reply Tin. That actually is not our product. We manufacture our product and are just now rolling it out. The site is new yes as we just began marketing. We have been producing plastic binder material for over 20 years and made the jump to 3D printing filament. We had our product tested by several printer people in the northwest to include intentional 3D out of Seattle (attached is the review). We started working on it back in March and it took this long to get it perfected.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

your FB page has a link to a site with only PLA 1.75mm seemed like was once European. site Tin said. I'm with Tin on this. got dozens of suppliers already in and out of US many have inferier qualities yet high prices. I can get lots of PLA and ABS both 1.75mm and 3mm for much less local just not lots of color selections but if its not useable or cost prohibitive for profit margins for resale competition. I dont need or want it. many on here already have plenty stock piles of useless plastic laying around with non clean, damp and out of sized specs. I for one live in Missouri USA and firmly adhere to our states slogan "SHOWME". sorry if that sounds rude or anything but hey there are billions of scammers in the world nowadays. and I have zero tolerance for anything wasting my tight budget fixed income on.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

Hello n2ri. We have been selling the extruded plastics since 1992 worldwide. We were/are making plastic binder coils. We decided to get into the filament business earlier this year and are getting great reviews. intentional3D compared our product to MakerBot 1.75 mm. We outperformed their product. I wish I could upload the file but the size is too big. We are coming out of the gate at our current pricing and will see where the market takes us from there. I didn't take your comments as rude btw. I am just trying to promote our product as I feel people will really like it once they get it. Frankly we just had our very first online order 2 days ago. We shipped it to Louisiana.

PVCSpiralsupply.com is the site to the home company. I assure you we are not a scam company. Thanks for taking the interest to reply. Have a great day and if interested in the review let me know. Take care.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

98% of available filament today is rebranded chinese, and you guys are crapping all over this company who has a background in processed plastic that exceeds home DIY 3D printing market. With nothing for you to base distrust on.

Nice.

What the US market needs is a company that already has the experience in extrusion and the equipment to step up and flood the market with higher-quality/grade plastic that already is contracted and purchases in bulk (since they already process plastic for other products) in order to sell filament at the same cost as the crap that is shipped over.

How about instead of: "This guy is a fake" or "I already have cheap filament" how about:

"Hey, this sounds interesting. Any chance you would like to donate a sample to one our trusted forum members to perform an unbiased review? Maybe even collaborate experience from some of us end-users?"

What you need to understand is that MG94 is not the only brand that can be used in high quality, and if mmore local companies with their already established connections to the raw material suppliers jump on board it may be possible to push the crap filament out of the current market.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

I ordered one.  At $50 shipped with the discount, it is steep.  I'm fine with paying a little extra for higher quality and US manufacture, but it is going to be hard to sell at that price.  Better precision isn't enough, if you want to stay in the premium price range you need to look at something like Faberdashery http://www.faberdashery.co.uk/products-page/.  They command a premium by offering a range of colors that are beautiful and unique.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

Sorry if I came across as downing this guy . Not my intention. I see some difficulties in communication here.
1 3d precision could not post a link to his web page because he is new.
2) I had a hard time  finding his page as I do not do Facebook and and his page has apparently not been mapped by Google.

You are correct we need to encourage and support  USA manufacturers.

3D precision good luck with your entry into 3d filament and I will keep you in mind when I purchase supplies.

I also like that you order as low as 5meter of a color. That makes it easy to have more colors on hand without spending alot of $$$$  Do something like that and offer mixed color lots and you should have no problem selling it.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

Hey guys it's all good. Ian I am happy you gave us a try. I was sent to the forums/web by the owners to get feedback regarding pricing, colors etc. We are all ears and look forward to any and all positive/negative feedback. It helps us tremendously. I am meeting with one of the owners this afternoon to go over this entire thread. Thanks again.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

In an effort to help I'd like to mention packaging.  You don't want to make the same mistakes others have (Octave).  A good thick sealed bag with something to absorb moisture is a must.  Avoid using any form of plastic wrap on the spools to contain the filament.
If a user has a problem of any sort with your filament, bust your ass to make it right.
Quick responsive customer support is a must along with quick and affordable shipping.
I am very excited to see a US manufacturer get into the game and I wish you the best of luck.
I will be ordering some up soon and look forward to doing business with you.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

Honestly, your price point has to get down to $30-$35 a roll. There are already a very small select few that offer standard colors out there with really good quality. Like Ian said, most people stick with Octave or other somewhat generic brands, not knowing that they are NOT top quality. I have found a few brands that are very high quality at $30 a roll, but only 3 colors. Higher premium for other colors is sound, but $50 may shun most buyers.

The big problem is knowing that MG94 (comparable to what Stratasys uses) material cost is less than $4 a lb. (in bulk). So if you plan to break into this market, your going to have to change your pricing practices. You wont get volume just by being higher quality. Your not going to get volume for pricing equivalent either. Your only going to get the volume by aggressively proving your better quality at the same price point the garbage is at. Your company has the advantage of doing this. Your already experts at extrusion processing, you probably already have the equipment costs matured from other products you produce. You already have contracts with raw material vendors and purchase in bulk. And it sounds like you have done your homework with what the key-points of this market is. Which is not to simply make a rod of ABS, but to make a rod of ABS that can easily be reformed after the initial extrusion.

Good luck to you Precision 3D.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

What he's referring to about Octave's mistake is that they had to trash $40k worth of filament because the shrink wrap melded with the filament and couldn't be removed without throwing away the first few layers of the spool.  A vacuum bag with some dessicant is generally better.

Offering smaller quantities would be helpful.  Custom lengths might be hard to do economically, but while I might want some Orange or Pink I would probably never go through 1kg of it.  Or if I did, it might take a year during which it would absorb enough mositure to ruin its quality.  If you could find spools to fit smaller amounts that would be great.  Faberdashery and others sell <1kg quantities in loose coils which is more prone to tangling when you print from them.

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

I said in my post that rude was not my intent either but just being frank about info provided compared to many previous experiences, some with long time USA big name companies that have also gone China on us while still advertizing "proudly made in USA" on there web sites. I have called some of them and talked to the CEOs when I was purchasing agent for a large multi site health centers in St Louis MO. most just told me "our competition did it so we followed suite" instead of keeping their namesake.
that being said if you truly are earnestly trying to retake our USA made world standard back then most of us here will be more than glad to aid you in this. like said above seek out a few heavy users here to do beta testing of samples and they can provide a spread sheet rating comparison listing pertinent stats.

to give a start on market demands I will say most of us would like to see at least 12-16 various colors (not shades of 4 colors nor colors that discontinue each run) that we can reorder with confidence when out, and not have to explain to customers why half their items are dif colors from b4.
try to keep prices of a 1kg/2# roll under $40 retail at least. all this needs to be available in 1.75mm ABS and PLA then others later if enough demand.

also one thing no other filament manufacturer has done is offer more than 2 selections of rolls with 4 different colors on a roll for average users to use without stocking 12-16 rolls of each type plastic (we are hearing talk of shelf life under 2 years b4 plastics degrade or fade, I think thats only white from China turning yellow as I stll have 50 year old ABS models not faded etc).
myself I would like to buy 4 rolls with 4 colors each and have a rainbow of 16 true colors to offer my 3Dhub customers at same prices.

then the new clear color PLA makerbot sells for over $65 a roll is another market you could win. we use these for items like Vases, cups, lenses (Red, Green, Amber, Blue, even Yellow, Purple and clear).

just stay with us and we will guide you to what we buy.

Gods speed, Mitch

+1 yet again. I would not mind paying a little extra for a superior product. I would just like to see some results by comparison via a neutral party. (e.g. Octave/Makerbot/etc. vs PVC Spiral)

Re: Precision 3D Printer Filament now available Made in the USA

I have been a filastuder for almost a year and for me the MG94, Toyolac, whatever are just fine. Some extrude a bit faster than others but if the properties are close on the data sheets the materials are fine for what I do. I like to extrude natural ABS and stain it afterwards to the color I want. I mostly use magic markers (31 colors available) and am please with the results.

I always wondered if that staining caused filament to swell from moisture
