Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

I have not adjusted anything on the board since the upgrade, no.

By stiff, I mean with the printer completely powered down, it takes both hands to move it by hand. Even the X carriage is stiff, but I can move it with one hand. Before the upgrade, everything ran VERY smooth. Which is a downer, but I did the upgrade solely so I have easily accessible replacement parts without buying new carriages from SD if I needed them. And on that note, my left pully bracket snapped when I loosened the belt at the beginning of the upgrade, and found SD prints their parts with a low infill. Shocker.
This is no longer effecting me on large prints only...had a layer shift while printing the 8th layer on an extruder 2 days ago.

With the carriage upgrade, did you change to linear bearings vs the standard sleeves?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Right...Linear Ball Bearings.  That should allow you to be flying smoothly!

If you take off the belts, then how is it?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

If I take off the belts they wobble in a diagonal fashion. At first I thought something was wrong with the print that they weren't sitting in right, but they are solid and I need to use a spare 6mm rod the pry them out.

But without the belts does everything slide more easily?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Oh yeah. MUCH smoother on the X. Front and back motion is still a bit stiff, but smoother.
What's your theory?

Just a shot...but maybe excessive belt tension?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

I'll give that a shot. I took a pic of the original belt tension before the upgrade and matched the current setup according to that. But shouldn't it be about equal tension as before if it worked? I understand Lawsy's Y carriages are a bit heavir than stock SD, so I assumed equal tension, if not a bit tighter, would be the way to go.

Thank you for that!
Last night I flipped the left Y pulley, now the top and bottom belt paths line up nicely. I loosened both belts and a smidge on the X and everything flows smooth now. Printed some replacement Y brackets lsat night which turned out great.

Run a few more large test prints this weekend, but it's already running much better.

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Run a few prints, some large and some small, and I still have it present. Sometimes on the first few layers, sometimes halfway through. The belts are not slipping and I have fans on all motors and 2 on the board, so i know it could not possibly be due to overheating.

And it is pausing during longer prints as time progresses. This is causing me to think it may be the stepper as I have read here http://www.soliforum.com/post/18295/#p18295

Thoughts?

Never had it happen firsthand, so my knowledge is limited; but with full fans on board, and after reading that link you posted, that would be my next step (no pun intended).

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

I think you should just upgrade to a better board wink
Just remember I stopped using that board for a reason.  Of course that reason wasn't that it didn't work, rather I wanted a better board.  Have you tried swapping that driver with one from another axis to see if it is a stepper issue?

Never even thunk of doing that. hmm

However, what do you think of this:

http://www.reprapdiscount.com/electroni … oard.html#
and then purchase the 8825 driveroff Amazon? I say that because I would never use the SD slot on the other/more expensive kits.

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Nothing wrong with that and you don't even need to buy drivers.  Just use the 8825 I'm sending you for the extruder and use the ones from the Sang for the other 3
