Topic: Dumb Question

If all of us are using glass beds ,ABS filament, similar temperatures, etc. why do some of have good results with ABS glue, others use glue sticks and still others hair spray .We do similar things with dissimilar materials and have similar results ?
Just a thought.      Bill D.

Re: Dumb Question

Not dissimilar materials. Glue stick has PVA glue in it, hairspray has vinyl copolymer. You need some sort of polymer on the bed, a sheet of PEU/ultem works too.

Re: Dumb Question

From what I have read and been told by people who know  Ie Matt at printedsolid.com  with a glass bed and ABS  you need to make juice desolve scrap abs in acetone and use it to create a film on glass or cover the the glass bed with kapton tape. for PLA use glue stick , hair spray or blue painters tape.
No dumb questions. we are all learning here.

Re: Dumb Question

You dont 'need' ABS slurry at all on a heated bed. Its purely an option. I've printed 10's of kg's of stuff on Kapton or Glass + Kapton or Glass + Hairspray.. although last 12months I've just been using PEI/Ultem - no mess, no fuss. Personally never resorted to ABS on the bed itself.

PLA you just need a less warm bed and blue tape.. or again, just boring old PEI...

But hey - thats just my own empirical experience across multiple printers and bed types. YMMV.

Re: Dumb Question

1 more question  what is   PEU/ultem  I've not seen this before

Re: Dumb Question

PEU is a typo - elmore meant PEI; which is the abbreviation for Polyetherimide . It is sold under the 'Ultem' trade name.

Re: Dumb Question

Adrian I see now there are lots of options after reading the PLA slurry thread. The great thing about forums lots of experience to draw on thanks.

Re: Dumb Question

the school type glue sticks are cheap, water cleanup, wont get over spray on printer moving parts, works on glass or kaptan, no smell, I bought a pile of em last year after school supplys marked down like 50 for price of 1 so Im set ;^P
now for a couple 6x6 glass plates so I stop shaving my kaptan during removal of prints. some are easy with icing or cooking spatulas (not the kind for flipping eggs). some need razor. last few I just layde icing spatchula on bed and gave cooled part swift a wack sliding on bed. they pop right off. just dont do thin parts.
