Topic: Layer shift only on skulls?!

I have my printer pretty dialed in at this point and have a fan on the board, so I know settings are good and the board *shouldn't be* getting hot enough to do this. However, anytime I try to print a skull, this happens.

This only happens when I am printing skulls, and I have tried a few different stl files.
The fan on the board is just a 40mm...does this look like an 80mm fan would work better?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Is it always in the same layers roughly?  I would bet it (nozzle) is getting snagged on some part of the print that is curling or otherwise over extruded.  Try one with a lower extrusion multiplier (As low as you can get it and still produce a good print).
This will at least tell you if it is over extrusion causing your problem.

Thanks for the quick response.
I doubt that is the case. I was watching it print. The platform lowered to prepare for the next layer and the shift started clean without any snags. But it is worth a tinker either way. smile

Running a test with this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:228684
Looking back, I've had this problem on some large prints like the oversized geared heart and the stated skulls. Perhaps adjusting the Y V-REF?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Air Jellyfish printed great. Even though the print in the previously posted link is hollow, whereas the skull has significant infill, I am partially convinced it may be the files. But to be certain, would anyone mind trying to print this?

I'll give it a go...but I won't be able to get to it until tomorrow night.

What infill are you using, and is that just a brim or a raft?

You're cooling the stepper drivers...did you check the v-ref and/or try lowering the extrusion rate as Wardjr recommended?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

I actually haven't printed since tuesday (going through withdrawls) and I will be getting on wardjr's suggestion AND adding a stronger/bigger fan just to be done with it.

I appreciate your time Ironman!

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Back your speed off maybe... Excessive speed jog/travel moves can occasionally turn up many layers into a print due to the particular geometry of that layer.

Complete guess half reading the thread but worth trying... Also use GCode Visualiser to make sure its not errors in the actual gcode

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

I really apprieciate the help, guys.
I actually printed 2 of the air plant pots and neither one failed, which made me happy...couldn't print one before all my mods. However, on the second air pot, I had a layer shift (subtle, but still...) around the last 30 layers whereas the first came out very well. All settings were the same. I touched up a bit of hairspray then heated and hit run job. So I still think it may be a heat related issue, but I will axperiment with your suggestions. Sucks that it's completely random so there's really no way to prove or disprove the effectiveness of the changes made.

I came down with another case of Sketchup Fever, so I'm hoping to get back on my doodle by tuesday.

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

So I took off my 40mm fan that was blowing onto the board, and replaced it with an 80mm fan in hopes to cover more area. Since my case also covers the board and the PSU, I understand it traps quite a bit of heat, which was my original guess.
However, I had a 2 hour print and shifted to the rear yet again!
While inspecting belts and random other points, I noticed that the Y motor is hanging halfway down the slots

Could someone confirm where this should be resting? I swear I recall it all the way down, but the drive belt is tight.

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

It should not be all the way down.  You'd be all out of adjustment if it were.

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Thank you. I think this confirmed that overheating is not the issue, and that my belts are indeed in check...
I will experiment with the info given and post results once I get another chance to tinker.

It just sucks that I have to spend about 2 hours and what, an entire 34 cents of filament to test?
Still fun though smile

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Make sure your pulley on your y-bar is not slipping.  Had that cause a layer shift on me once.

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Y does not seem to be slipping. However, when I put my printer back together, a couple things occured that did not make it a smooth process.
*As I loosened the left Y belt, the stock SD printed pulley bracket snapped, so I had to replace it. Fortunately, I had already printed several replacements.
*I installed the X motor gear upside down.
*I half-assed the belt alignment process.

Think it may be due to them all combined?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

Pulled my doodle apart last night and fixed the X gear...so the belt is pretty straight now.
While performing the belt alignment, I noticed the left belt was uneven in comparison to the top and bottom. http://i.imgur.com/orBtwBv.jpg

Rough angle, I know. But I think by flipping the pulley I will be able to get that sucker to straighten back out.
Also, since doing the carriage upgrade, manually moving side to side and front to back is much stiffer that the original design. Could this be adding to my problem?

Re: Layer shift only on skulls?!

How stiff is stiff?

A little out of my knowledge base here, but since upgrading your carriage, have you done a Vref adjustment or check?  As far as I know the motors will step if instructed to unless their torque capacity is exceeded.
