Topic: Filament Storage Ideas?

I am looking for a more efficient way to store my filament. I have something around 30 rolls of filament(I like different colors and types) which are in two overflowing bins that could easily fill three large bins but I am thinking there has to be a better way.

I thought of the idea of rods, but access and the weight of the rolls would be a problem. Ideas? Did someone else come up with  solutions? Or have ideas?

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

Obviously you'll need a larger solution than this:

But I like the idea of a dryer/dehumidifier. Maybe you could buy and mod a tall bookshelf from ikea?

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

I doubt it would help for that many spools, but I use a cooler that has a nice sealing top as the bin to store my filament (not close to 30 reels though). I also have some containers of the crystal cat litter inside it that various people recommend as a drying agent.

You can get some really big coolers, mind you, but that can get expensive.

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

I'm using one of those big plastic storage containers with the clip-down lid and a big container of damp-rid. The plan was to put a grid on the bottom so the reels could sit in there on the flanges, and the damp-rid sits in a layer underneath. Haven't quite finished yet, I just stuffed everything into the box and left it there for now. Good thing is they can stack, so I could always get a second one.

Ikea expedit bookshelf a la http://www.soliforum.com/topic/1357/? SD2 would fit in one square, print u-shaped mounts for rails for (probably) all the other squares, and hang the filament in them... Save one square for some demo prints. smile

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

All seem like possible ideas. I may just need to do the multiple plastic bins methods just because I have so many rolls. So many colors.....they need to be had lol

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

I use high tech trash bags with old silica gel desiccant smile  After more than a year for some of the rolls all seems to be working fine!

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

I just throw some silica into the bag the filament came with. If I know I'm not gonna use the filament for a long time, I high tech trash bag it like COASTER wink
Personally, I keep the filaments I use often right next to my chair in one of those plastic desk organizers from Walmart (like $12). I can fit 3 Octave spools in each of the larger drawers. Including some HTPLA, I have 7 spools in one convenient area.
All the PLA spools literally falling out of my closet, though...

I need a shrink ray big_smile

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

30 rolls? Sounds like you need a dehumidified walk in closet more than a container lol

Maybe something like a cheap stackon gun safe or old armoire with a Golden rod in it

I like having all sorts of color and material options hehe. I don't wanna think how much I've spent on them all. Haha. I'm working on empting some cabniet space.

I think that since your printer is all up and running at the moment.  You should consider buying some fancy filament to celebrate big_smile

Haha, Well actully: I am working on getting some of the new BronzeFill from Colorfabb (80% bronze powder, 3x heavier then ABD/PLA) soonish. As soon as the US reseller gets some; I'm giving them my money haha

I am just as bad with parts for mods.  Everyone needs at least one extra of everything, right?
I literally have enough extra parts around to build another printer.  Not to mention an extra printer just in case something happens to the other one wink

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

I suggest putting the filaments in a place where you do not have any windows or AC. Windows and AC is equal to air blowing in is equal to water is equal to filament absorbing water.

A solution may be having a normal parcel box with lots of dehumidifier in it and a a filter above and under it to absorp unnecessary air.

An air conditioner is just a huge efficient dehumidifier. If anything, having the filament next to the output of an air conditioner would be good for the filament.

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

I've been toying with the idea of buying a used freezer to store filament in.  They seal airtight, and I don't even care if it works; I'll probably just put damp-rid in the bottom anyway.  It shouldn't be difficult to mount some rod holders to support numerous spools; not sure if it would hold 30 though.

Craisglist in my area has several upright- and chest-type freezers (15 cu. ft.) in the $60-$75 range.

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

I have been pondering this .

What about checking out local thrift stores for any type of glass front cabinet , hutch china cabinet gun cabinet whatever then yo can  add "v"   or if it had shelves add stripts to keep the rolls from rolling.  add a dehumifier if desired.
this would give easy access proper storage you should make minimum movement and time to acess what you want. And no bending over . you and others can see all  the pretty colors.

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

Just as a note; most of the speciality filaments will have a 'shelf life'... there is a strong temptation to stock up and have stuff 'on hand' but keep in mind that its print quality will degrade over time regardless... stuff like laywoo; laybrick; nylons; etc. You need to use it within 12-18months from production (not sale)...

Its maybe a 'nice' problem to have to have to chew through a couple of rolls of t-glasse for example before they 'expire'; but its also probably not a cost-effective approach.  The same applies for ABS and PLA.. but the more vanilla a filament is, the more life it will have. The more exotic; the less inert the filament will be regardless of how its stored.

So unless you are turning over that much filament; mass storage is probably not a good approach to engineer around. Instead look to have a solid supply relationship so you can rapidly acquire 'fresh stock' as needed.

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

old refrigeration boxes are not a good choice running or not. if running the cold will draw moister to it faster when opened to the air.
if not running (especially if used) they become mold and mildew laden and make bad odors and still get damp each time door opens and the dryall /descant gets saturated with water and turns to slime. a brand new ice chest/cooler if air tight may work if trying to keep cool while traveling in heat a few hours or out of sun light. but a tote as I said above is fine and not as costly or bulky for most indoor users

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

Thanks for that note Adrian.
Wouldn't it be nice if suppliers had a "Best If Used By" sticker on their spools?

Then again, the user's method of storage may negate the "expiration" as portrayed on said sticker.

Exactly; and I guess its also because there's issues defining exactly what 'reduced quality prints' really means.. but rest assured; there is a concept of 'fresh filament' and they don't age like a fine wine wink

Re: Filament Storage Ideas?

the only shelf life on plastics I have seen unless exposed to the elements (sun/light, moisture, temp extremes etc) has been China made White turns canary Yellow after 2 years regardless of storage conditions (like on the WowWee robots). I have American made ABS models made over 50 years ago that have zero degradation even exposed to room air.

China rubber also has a useful life of under 1 year compared to USA rubber over 40 years old still useable. do I need to go on?
