Topic: Show off your Cases

I was always curious to see what everyone did to enclose their SD's. I can find a few pictures sporadically but there doesn't seem to be one thread to see what everyone did, so lets start one. I've been working on this for about a week now, just finished last night, Breaks down completely using earth magnets for easy dis assembly for repair or mod. Its almost over 30 pieces I have to print, but I think its going to be pretty cool looking when its done.

So what has everyone else done?

Overkill is underrated!!!

Re: Show off your Cases

It seems your "Ghetto" is what we call "agricultural". Such as ....

Spool hanger = bent reinforcing rod wedged into cleaning cloth roll. SD2 with enclosure inverted, then ex-something (not sure which) packing polystyrene duct taped together and onto top of machine. Slot at top for filament to wind through. Loading new filament involves loosening side tape to get fat hands into top to reload.

PC underneath is nearly dead Dell, remote dektop in from home PC to drive.

Just visible behind is "home brand" hairspray used for adhesion, jar for smoothing and home brand nail polish remover (acetone).

Off to left are some of the pushrods from 318 Chrysler engine being rebuilt, under bench are 350 chev engine parts and various tools.

Re: Show off your Cases

Here's mine. A combination of rare earth magnets, 2 3mm screws, and some MDF with a factory white coating. But I really think I am going to be changing over to a design similair to yours.

Great job! Curious to hear how the printing, and fitting goes.

Re: Show off your Cases

I have had this case partially done for over a year. I have neither had time to finish it, post on this site or even 3D print much. But I have been waiting to share it, and this seemed like a good time!

The case was designed in AutoCAD. Most of the panels where CNC'ed out of expanded PVC *not the ideal material for this* and a product similar dibond *plastic and aluminum snadwich*. Graphics are all out of vinyl and painted to match. Acrylic panels are held in by magnets. Handled where 3D printed.

The one thing I was waiting on to have this finished was for someone to get the viki LCD up and running. I have been so busy I'm not even sure anyone figured it out yet.

Re: Show off your Cases

Thanks everyone! I just reread my post and I apologize for not proof reading it before hand...oh well.

Re: Show off your Cases

Here is mine. It is all plexiglass, weather stipping, and magnets. I kept breaking the printed parts I was using for the top corners so I went with wood and metal instead. I've had the sides enclosed for a while but just finished the top. Honestly, I have not noticed any improvement so far due to it, but I think it looks good.

http://imgur.com/Sr7VD6W

Of course, like everything on my printer, it is not done. There are hinges on the back of the top part, but I need to add a rope or rod brace so that I can hang it open. Eventually, I will get around to putting hinges on the front and maybe even the sides if I start feeling ambitious.

Re: Show off your Cases

I had a bunch of acrylic lying around, so I threw together a case. Also whacked in some spare WS2801 LED strips I had and popped in an Arduino Pro-Mini to drive them. It snoops the TX pins on the RAMPS and I'll eventually throw in code to change the colors based on temp (one side for bed, one for extruder, horizontal for ambient) ... One day I'll also get around to using it to do more temp control using some peltiers I have lying around - throw in a few with some heatsinks and some fans.. again just because I can not for any dire need. Meh.. its entirely strictly a 'when I'm bored/have time' project... Couple of magnets seal the door shut. No handle, pulling the side opens it just fine with no flex (Its double layered, and I did a small additional acrylic strip to hold the magnets after I epoxied them in with some high temp epoxy)...

Uses some PTFE tube into some Push-Fit connectors to pass through the acrylic... Also put in some weather-stripping.

(Note, ignore my bed - its a conglomieration of bits at the moment as I've keep meaning to get around to doing another post about some stuff... tongue )

Re: Show off your Cases

I finally got a chance to work on my new case design recently. I decided to take it in a different direction, giving a more polished look with a retro steampunky feel.

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=6013

I cut and routed some alderwood and stained it mahogany color for the frame.

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=6014

For the doors I soldered copper u channel (came) around plexiglass and finished the case off with brass knobs, hinges and trunk corners. The top is plexiglass bent into a U shape and glued to an end cap piece.
