Topic: Solidoodle 4 help

Hello,
I posted some time ago about having issues with my solidoodle four not extruding. Several weeks later and it still isn't extruding and not due to a lack of effort.

So, after adjusting and leveling the print bed, making sure it was the required height away from the extruder I tried printing. There was nothing coming out. Thinking I had a clog that wasn't coming out I cleaned the extruder, nothing changed, thinking there was a tough clog in there I cleaned again. nothing changed. So I finally just out-right replaced the extruder. Nothings changed.

I finally noticed that the wheels that feed the filament to the extruder weren't moving during a print. They do however move when I manually feed filament through the extruder.

Now, with all that explained (I hope I explained it well enough) I have a few questions:

-Is the press arm suppose to sit loosely(as in is it suppose to move)? Or do I have to tighten it down all the way?
-What is the required height from the tip of the extruder to the print bed? I've been told .3mm and .5mm. Both of which don't seem to work.

I have a few more questions, but for now lets start with these two.

Side note: The printer has worked up until all these issues arose and the print I am attempting is one that has worked in the past.

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

If the motor isn't actually turning during a print but turns and extrudes fine manually.  Then something on the software side is messed up.  You could have so many things wrong here you just need to eliminate things one at a time.  It could be a wiring problem or a VREF problem or even something as simple as a wrong setting.

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

The arm can be just a bit loose, thats fine, and since you can extrude manually i don't see a problem there.

Is there any chance you got the "Dry Run" enable in Repetier Host? that would make your printer ignore any commands to extrude during a print.

0.3-0.5 seems a bit much, you want just enough space to slide a piece of paper semi freely between the bed and nozzle.
(I only does this when leveling the bed, then I do a test print and use the z stop screw to get the height I want)

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

the dryrun box also turns off the heaters so I think you would notice that, did you ever post the stl file you were trying to print also post the gc file as it will have all your start code as well asany extrusion commands and will be easy to determine if it is the sw or hw at fault.

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

How do I  find out if it is software?

I'm currently using the Repetier software that comes with the solidoodle printer.

I tried using the updated version of Repetier but it wasn't finding my printer (even after I copied all the settings my previous repetier software had).

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

Yor could slice your .stl and save the gcode and post it here, it should be easy to see from the code

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

okay, so I ran into a rather strange problem.
I switched software to the updated version of Repetier and it works perfectly when extruding. The only thing is the bed isn't moving and it's printing in a corner now. But hey! At least it's extruding!

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

At least your optimistic wink  There is nothing better than a half full glass smile
So what your saying is the z-axis won't move at all?
Could you be more specific when you say printing in the corner?
In R-H, Printer Settings, Printer Shape, do you have Home x (Max) Home y (Max) and Home z (Min) ???

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

Alrighty, so because I'm not entirely sure how to explain whats happening I've posted a link to a video I made in my signature (since I'm still to new to post links). You'll see the extruder just hanging out in the corner like I explained with the print bed not moving.

I did discover I can move the print bed manually. Dunno if that will help, but there it is big_smile.

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

Yep, you're right that is messed up.  Are you using slic3r or Skienforge?

Re: Solidoodle 4 help

Can you post a screen shot of your start code?
