Topic: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

Why didn't I do that sooner ????

I can't recognize my printer ! It's amazing.

I have some problem with the filament getting out of guide between the extruder stepper and the hole of the E3D, but I'm fine tuning my extruder temp control right now, I 'm supposing that is the problem when the extruder goes from 230 to 220 degree after the 1st layer, it gets to that result.

my PID were bad, and my temperature was oscillating badly.

But I got a set of dies, and a bucket, so I can play yatsee ! That's all that matter.

Now I'm going to upgrade to the 5mm rod for Z wobbling issues, with the slop nuts from thingiverse.

I need to say thanks a lot to Lawsy for his great design on the extruder and the carriage, my printer is just conmpletely different.

I'll post some pictures in the next post

My main concern was that my stock rods were bent. so I could never have my bed calibrated, and it was driving me nuts. I changed everything to industry grade hardened shafts and LM8UU linear bearings, but it took me 3 or 4 time to get the carriage printed right, it was warping bad.

I first was thinking that my heater bed was bad, and upgraded it, then, I polished my aluminium plate. Then, I finally found out that my rods were off.

My hot end was giving me problems too, so I went for an E3D, and since I was changing everything, I figured I will change the hot end as well.

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

AZERATE : You're going to love it.

The machine looks way more professional, and acts very smoothly. It is just awesome. No heavy lubrication needed, it makes so much more sense! Also, I noticed that the belt tension is more easy to adjust, as the carriage will move with just one belt in the worst case scenario (it doesn't move straight, but it moves and doesn't bind and lock like the bushings.)

I'm running my prints at 75 mm/s, and everything is flawless with the E3D.

One advice to everyone upgrading : Take really good care of the X axis stepper motor when you put it back in.

The screws needs to be short enough not to go to the bottom of the threaded hole. The thread is very fragile in aluminium, and you can mess it very fast, happened to me on one hole...

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

I have a SD4 with the 150W 12V 12.5A power supply.  Do I really need to replace it if I go to the E3D.  I know it pulls 40W but I can't seem to find what the hot end supplied with the SD4 draws.  Any advise?

You can run the E3D with the stock PSU but since the stock PSU  is already running at max capacity (cheap PSU).  It is recommended that you upgrade to more power.  I have run two different SD3's with (SD4 without the case)  E3d's with the stock PSU with OK results.  All you can do is try it and see if it is going to handle it and for how long.  Eventually the LED's will begin to flicker as a sign that the PSU is maxed out.  But it will work for a while.

I ran for about two months on my stock PSU. Then the bed took longer to reach temp and didn't want to stay there. The E3D is well worth the cash and time. But it is recommended to grab a stronger PSU like this one: http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-Switch … rnight+360
After buying the PSU and E3D, you're looking at about $100...worth every penny. If you are located in the US, buy the E3D from Filastruder.com

The hardest part of the E3D is the firmware since SD ships all printers with a Printrboard. However, there are many threads on here that walks people through updating and flashing the firmware.

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

Yep, I agree with everybody here,

My stock PSU didn't last long even with the original setup. I bought my machine used, so don't really know the history of it, but the PSU gave up like 2 month after I purchased it.

It will work with your E3D, maybe your heater bed will have a hard time to keep up with your set temperature, but it will work long enough for you to source a new PSU and be prepared for when it fails.

On a safety note, my PSU burnt when it failed. It smoked heavily, almost caught on fire. So be sure that it is in a safe well vented spot so it will not get to hot, causing fire.

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

thanks willy,

You'll see that with this carriage, you won't recognize your printer. My wife is always laughting at me when I'm printing, because I sit in front of the glass and look at my machine working...

Now with the E3D and the new carriage, I feel confortable enough to start a print in the morning and go to work. My part waits for me when I come home, that's great !

I'd like now to use this "power" button in repetier, to kick the ATX PSU on remotely. So I could tell the printer to turn on and off from the software, and be more quiet.

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

Well I got my new E3D and made a great holder, hooked up the new power supply and set the x axis, leveled the table and went for my first print.  I can't get the bed up to temperature and it really takes a long time.  In addition to that the LED's are flashing.  It all points to not enough power but I have the new power supply, so what is up with that???  The first print is coming out fantastic.

I just got done with this issue myself. What PSU did you buy? Can you forward a link?
And you are correct on the power. Depending on which PSU you picked up, this may be a very simple fix.

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

I got it on ebay. It is a Genssi S-350-12.  I upped the wire gage from the PSU to the printer and that got rid of most of the issues but I still have a little LED flutter, very little.  I plugged the SD4 supply back in and it works perfectly.  Mine is almost new so maybe they are supplying a better one now.  it is 150W 12V 12.5A.  Anyway the E3D is amazing.  I haven't braved the firmware update yet but with the SD4 thermistor it is working flawlessly.  Sure wish I knew why the power supply is a dud.

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

You need to update the firmware. You can run for a little bit, but you aren't getting the full benefits of the E3D. So I would recommend taking care of that as soon as possible. I ran it like that for a couple of weeks, then it started stopping mid-print and I had to keep restarting the printer AND computer.

There is a pot for tuning on the far left near that green LED on the PSU. You can use that to up the power. Just a tiny turn should do the trick, but double check the voltage with a meter before powering your board....you don't want to send too much juice to it.
Also, use some wire to jump the terminals to one another. This will give you a very steady flow.
Here's a good example.

Thanks, I will give it a try.  How much voltage can the board take?  I plan on updating the firmware but just wanted to see E3D in action.

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

AZERATE,  thanks for all the help!  Now I have clean power.  So I am attempting to do the firmware update and I have come to a stumbling block.  Gee, I bet no one else has had an issue (lol).  This may seem really stupid but I can't fine the URL to download step C which is "Download the firmware".  The url in the instructions doesn't work and all the goggling for the last hour has had no results.  Nothing on this site seems to help either. Any one got a URL for current Solidoodle firmware?

Re: upgraded SD3 with E3D and Lawsy's LM8UU carriage... I have a question:

Since this thread is more directed toward Lawsy's carriage upgrade, I would recommend discussing this further at http://www.soliforum.com/topic/4520/e3d … 3-fw-help/ to prevent utterly hijacking this thread. smile

The firmware is not like another device you may be familiar with (i.e. camera, mixer, phone, etc), so you have to manually adjust this. Have you read http://www.soliwiki.com/E3D_extruder yet? I'm sure you have since you already assembled it on the mechanical level. It discusses the update which you must change yourself: thermistor type, extruder max temp, etc. Remember, though....if you have the Printrboard, you will have a different approach to this update. The following quote got me the furthest:

I just updated my solidoodle 3 printers firmware tonight. It has the Printboard Rev E, my operating system is Windows 7 64bit

These instructions I compiled after talking with Adrian, and reading the existing wiki (http://wiki.solidoodle.com/update-firmware)
A: Download the Arduino IDE (www.arduino.cc)
B: Download Teensyduino (http://pjrc.com/teensy/td_download.html)
C: Download the firmware  (https://github.com/ozadr1an/Solidoodle- … in_v1_beta)
D: Download the upload BootloaderHID (http://blog.lincomatic.com/wp-content/u … derHID.zip)

1.    Install Arduiono IDE
2.    By default it installed in C:/program files/Arduino (or program files C:/program files(x86)/Arduino)
3.    Install Teenyduino
4.    It will ask you where the arduino install is, point it to the above folder
5.    Unzip the firmware file to a folder you will remember
6.    Open the Arduino.exe (shortcut put on your desktop after the Arduino IDE installed
7.    Click Tools, Board (might say Board:Arduino Uno) and select the Teensy ++2.0
8.    Click Tools, Serial Port, and change it to the port of your printer
(If you are unsure, and using windows, click the start button, right click computer, click properties, click device manager, and click on ports. Your printer will be the one listed as “USB serial port (Com X) write down whatever the x is, and put it in step 8)
9.    Click File – Open
10.    Browse to the folder you extracted in step 5, select the file (in the marlin folder) named Configureation.H , double click it or select it and click open
11.    You will notice that there are several tabs across the top: Marlin, Configuration.H, ConfigurationStore.cpp etc, select the Configuration.H tab
12.    Scroll down until you see (in black as the grey is comments and effects nothing)
#define SOLIDOODLE_VERSION 2 (line 22 on mine) Change to #define SOLIDOODLE_VERSION 3
13.    #define MOTHERBOARD  62 (line #76 on mine…you can tell the line by clicking the code, and looking at the bottom left, a number will be there, this is the line of code)
Change it to read #define MOTHERBOARD 81
14.    find #define TEMP_SENSOR_0 1 (line 120 ) and change to #define TEMP_SENSOR_0 6
15.    find #define HEATER_0_MAXTEMP 225 (line145)  change to #define HEATER_0_MAXTEMP 350
16.    350C is the max the thermister can is good for, the hotend can go higher, but you’ll need a thermocouple instead of the thermister
17.    In the top arduino menu, click Sketch, then Verify/compile
18.    If you installed Teensyduino, it will pop up a window, just close it
19.    If your sketch does not report errors and simply gives you the Binary sketch size and memory use, it is safe to upload. If it reports errors, you have made a syntax error, and should recheck those lines you changed.
20.    Before doing the final compile, click file – save (if you do not, it will not upload the changes)
21.    Hold down SHIFT and click Compile
22.    There has been a .hex file created. Marlin.cpp.hex, in my case (windows 7) it is under C:/users/whateverYourProfileNameIs/AppData/Local/Temp….it will be in the folder
named build-xxxxxxxxx.tmp (the x’s are a string of numbers) created today. You must have view hidden or system files enabled in folder options (control panel. Have view folders by icon instead of category enabled, folder options, view, check Show hidden files and folders)
23.    Unzip the BootloaderHID.Zip (step D) to a folder
24.    Copy the Marlin.cpp.hex file, and past it in the folder above (the bootloaderHID folder
25.    Make sure your computer is connected to the printer via usb cable
26.    Add a jumper to the BOOT pins on the printboard (back of the printer) or bend the 2 pins so they are touching , then press the RESET button
27.    Open a new command window (click the windows start button, and in the search programs field (windows vista or newer) type CMD.
28.    Within the CMD window, navigate to the folder you unzipped the BootleaderHID to in step 23
29.     Type “hid_bootloader_cli -mmcu=at90usb1286 -w -v Marlin.cpp.hex” (no quotations)
30.    It should say something like “read Marlin.cpp.hex xx bytes, xx% usage, found halfkay bootloader, programming…………………..Booting
31.    Remove the jumper, or unbend the boot pins on the printboard (back of the printer)
32.    Press reset
33.    Verify that you have updated them, start up Repetier Host.
34.    Click Connect
35.    Look at the bottom of the screen, you will see a greeting msg when you connect it should now read
02:09:14.238 : echo:Unknown command: ""
