Topic: Motors stopped working

Hi,

would you please help me with my problem.

I have installed E3D hot end. I have the old power supply. I wanted to switch to new one, but it almost burned my board (printrboard). I've done everything successful, but after all those operations all of my motors stopped working.

XYZ plus extruder motor are not working.

I can heat extruder and bed.

Do you have any idea how to fix it?

Re: Motors stopped working

Would you mind elaborating on how it almost burned your board?  Also, have you changed the firmware yet or still running with what you were using previous?

Bowden SD3, Rumba, E3D hotend, Mk5 with RtRyder changes, Direct drive Y axis and bearings, GT2 pulleys and braided fishing line, Lawsy linear bearing conversion, M3 Z screw.

Also which main board do you have? or when was the printer made? and what kind of troubleshooting skills and tools do you have.

I had a similar problem when I upgraded. Have you been able to print since flashing the firmware?

Re: Motors stopped working

While I was connecting the new 30A power supply there was a small smoke from board. I've continued with old one.

Yes I have updated firmware. I was able to go to 300° to finish extruder installation.

I have Printerboard board. I don't know about my skills (ask and see if I can answer).

Since flashing the firmware I was not abble to print because I can't move and extrude.

Re: Motors stopped working

Smoke is never a good thing...

You may have just blown a trace to the power rail for the motors...or could have fried something else... can you take some close up hi res pics of the board and post them up? do you have a DMM?

use imgur.com and just mess the url up a bit to get past the minimum post link protection.

Re: Motors stopped working

Here is a topic I posted a couple months ago: http://www.soliforum.com/topic/5814/is- … aind-dead/

I had motor and control failure, but everything heated and I was able to extrude even though EEPROM reset everything to zero which caused alarm.
Read this thread. I was running on a Printrboard and the firmware was not perfect which caused many issues, the most important ones are on the thread.

Re: Motors stopped working

I've tried Adrian's Marlin and still no progress. I've found out that actually I have no information at Firmware EEPROM Configuration, It is not clickable on win and it is blank on mac.

Re: Motors stopped working

Your extruder chip looks overheated (need to zoom in) lower left corner, fourth leg is discolored even. If that chip burnt out, it could be shorting the supply to the other chips. Or they may be burnt too.

Check the other chips to see if they are discolored also.

Re: Motors stopped working

Did you confirm the polarity of the new supply matches the old one?

+1

It looks like there is a hole the magic smoke used to get out of the chip so in the very least you will have to replace the extruder driver chip.

And since the driver chips use through board heatsinking with via's it means you most likely can't use chipquik to remove it without damaging more stuff(unless you're really good)

I've followed this manual and used the exact same power supply, that is supported there. And I am sure I plug it all right. Black V-, Red V+.  soliwiki.com/Upgrade_The_Power_Supply

I got it, that magic smoke came out of the upper left chip imgur.com/6BvJXgw

I am going to buy a new board.

Thank you all.
