Topic: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Just ordered an E3d and got it assembled. I am having trouble figuring out where the red wires (heating cartridge)  and the thermistor wire attach to the red and blue connectors. I am completely new to wiring and assembling the thermistor was the first thing I have ever come close to it. I also have need help powering the fan it came with. If someone can help me out with this or point me in the right direction, I will be forever grateful.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

I presume you've found this? It's a great start.
http://www.soliwiki.com/E3D_extruder

Heater cartridge red wires join to red connector (polarity / which way around doesn't matter).
Thermistor joins to blue connector, again polarity does not matter.
Fan should be always on, so can be spliced to the fan on the back of the extruder stepper - red to red, black to black.

The wiring is a bit of a hidden task with this one, although it looks simple doing it well can be fiddly. Everyone has a slightly different idea about what it the right way too. I chopped off my connectors, I ran the red wires from the e3d heater cartridge through the sleeve and all the way back to the board with a new connector there. I put in new thermistor wiring in the same manner. The connectors on the board side are pretty common, you should be able to dig around in an electronics store and find some new ones that match.

You say you're new to wiring - it is possible to order crimp terminals to replace the ones from the solidoodle hot end, which you can crimp (squish) on with a pair of pliers. Search this forum to find out more about those.

Also, bootlace ferrules (search it on google/ebay) make nice joints without solder where you need them. Otherwise, you may need access to a soldering iron (they're not expensive, but cheaper is borrowing a friend's), and have a play with that (this is what I do, it's very handy).

In any case, good luck, and don't be afraid to ask further questions!

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Thanks for the fast reply Grob.

I am trying to use the connectors that are already on the block. Is it possible to use the male and female ends you can disconnect when you had to unclog the old extruder, and crimp the new wires to them or do I need to order more connectors?

The Wiki provides several options, but as I have never done this before, makes it very vague. Used the Wiki and the documentation on the Filastruder site when assembling.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

I have ZERO skill in electrical work. Nadda. Ziltch.
I ordered some replacement connector that matched stock SD ones (red and blue), and found it difficult to keep connection. I would constantly lose heat and prints would fail. So I went to Home Depot and spent $3 on male/female crimp connectors.

It was fast, simple, and very comfortable for someone with shaky hands and know electrical skills.

It can be a little rattling the first time. After you get it done, it's fairly easy in retrospect.
Just don't sweat it. This forum is packed with friendly people willing to help. smile

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Thanks man! That's really reassuring! Do you happen to know the type of connectors you bought?

A few questions:
Can I use JST connectors for the original red and blue connectors?
If I need to replace the ones attached to the main block, should I remove the orange kaptontape? (it tells me not to lol) I have extra to rewrap it if i have to.

I am a little wary to mess with the circuit board in the back and plug them in. I dont even see where to put them. I wish there was a picture or video tutorial online or something.  I am a very visual learner. Been learning some wiring techniques through youtube videos to try and familiarize myself with all of this.

You can easily find this in the electrical section at home depot.
If you go for the cimp/snap connectors like it did (which I love), slide the male in and out from the female a few times per connection. This will help settle the contact so it still makes connection, but will allow easy removal if you need to make repairs or adjustments in the future.

For some reason the direct link doesn't work. Scroll down close to the bottom and click on Snap-Plug Connectors.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

I removed those stock connectors because they can be hard to find and can be a pain to make a wire connection. Virtually the only thing you need for wire connectors are:
1) Security since they will be moving about and shaking.
2) A solid connection with the wire.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Thanks man. I got the snap on connectors from home depot. To ensure that that I can get both ends connected, is it safe to remove the orange tape? It just looks like its holding the wires in place.

Yep, I've even used scotch tape to hold them back in place with no issues.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Great. I got them all prepared to be connected. I just in need to know how to install the fan on the extruder. It says it can be spliced into the other fan, but I have no idea how and where to splice it.

You can just cut the red and black wires that go to the extruder motor fan and tie them all together red to red and black to black.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Thanks man! So I just snip the red and black wires, mesh the 3 wire ends together  (2 ends from snipped originals, plus the new fan wires) and then use a ferrule or something to hold them all together?

Sorry for all the questions. Just making sure I am doing this right as this is all new to me.

Thanks for all the support btw!

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Basically that's it.  If you are using connectors of some sort connect the fan wires together in the same connector then the wires to the board in the other.  Or just crimp them all together.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Great! Thank you very much! I am work now and will probably be asking questions about the firmware update and what not. I havnt looked into it yet but when I get home I will finish assembling everything and get started on that.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Hey Guys! I got the extruder installed. I am having some issues with the Firmware. I found the topics in this forum and changed the lines of code where they told me to. I am having some weird things happening since I changed them. Firstly, the Repetier software seems to crash a lot, giving me the M999 restart prompt. Also when I click on the direction arrows in Repetier to move the Extruder around, it often does not read and then the software crashes. It also does not go up to 310C and stops at the cap around  220 or so (I dont remember the exact number).
Is there a way to get the default firmware? Also could this be a power supply issue? I still have the one provided from the original.

Sounds to me like you figured out how to change the firmware but haven't figured out how to flash it to the board.  I am guessing that if you changed max temp to 300 it is hitting max temp at 220.  You don't want the default SD firmware as that is what is causing M999 max temp

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

I put the two pins together on the board and hit reset while they were touching. Is that correct? I cut and copied the firmware updates that someone posted on here. The instructions were great. I believe it may be the flashing. I did not get the correct message when I restarted Repetier after uploading.

EDIT: Okay. I reread what I did wrong when flashing. I am going to retry this when I get home from work.

Quick question: Where can I get a more powerful power supply that will fit on the Solidoodle 3? Any physical stores? Ie Best buy, Radioshack , etc? If not, a link to one online?

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

The firmware doesn't have the language.h tab setup with a setting for the 81 printrboard, but that won't affect how anything works.  That's why you won't see repetier host change with regards to the firmware version displaying.

Shorting the two pins while resetting the board is correct.  It seems since it doesn't go over 220 the firmware didn't actually flash over.  Are you using the HID bootloader to flash?

This is the Arduino suite provided from the Solidoodle site which supports our Printrboards:
http://www.reprap-usa.com/download/arduino0022.zip

For easy checking to see if it updated or not you can fix the language problem yourself when you're in the firmware changing values around.

Lines 32-34 in language.h, I have the printrboard and using 81 myself.  The firmware I have from lawsy's github doesn't have that as an option in the language tab.  I just added the extra "|| MOTHERBOARD == 81"
#elif MOTHERBOARD == 62 || MOTHERBOARD == 33 || MOTHERBOARD == 34 || MOTHERBOARD == 81        //{SD Patch}
    #define MACHINE_NAME "Solidoodle"                                    //{SD Patch}
    #define FIRMWARE_URL "http://github.com/mlaws/solidoodle2-marlin/"   //{SD Patch}

I just got this and it's working pretty well.
Radio Shack would charge an arm and a leg for something like this. I'd recommend Amazon-ing it up and take advantage of their free 2 day shipping trial. It would also give you an excuse to grab a spool of filament smile

+1 to Azerate's suggestion.  Just make sure you toggle that 110v/220v switch to the right setting before you try it.

Re: Just got an E3d-How to wire? Complete beginner

Thanks guys for the help. Got the power supply coming in the mail.

I am still having issues with the firmware. I dont know if I should make a new topic about it.

I followed the instructions posted here: http://www.soliforum.com/topic/4520/e3d … lp/page/2/

From En-rage

I got the github message when I opened Repetier. My CMD prompt booted . However when I connect, my thermister does not read and I cannot get my solidoodle do to anything.
The bed wont move, the extruder wont move, nothing. It just turns on and the fans spin.

What I think what it is, is that the reset button on the motherboard is not working. When I hit reset, it seems like nothing happens.

For the Booter I used tin foil and and tried with electrical tape to hold them together on two different occasions. The one with tin foil was the one that actually worked.

Did I do something to the motherboard? Do I need a new one? Is there something that I am missing? I do not know what to do.
