Topic: USB Hub W/ Switches (Need Help!)

So I bought this fancy thing:
http://ebaypa.com/albums/20120002/sku027048_led1.jpg
to plug my mini desktop cooling fan and my solidoodle itself into, for I can turn them both off with a switch.

Problem now is, for some reason the Solidoodle loses connection to repetier host after about 90 seconds. Like, it says it's connected, but the temperature stops reading, and the controls no longer do anything.

I checked by re-plugging the SD3 into a standard USB port on my computer and it went back to working as normal.

Any ideas? Is there a setting (baud rate, etc) I can change in Repetier ?? Also I noticed this little USB hub has a spot to put an AC power adapter on, maybe it's not getting enough juice? I don't understand why it would work for like 90 seconds though then quit.

My SD3:  Clear plexiglass case, case heater, X axis stabilizer, Z axis stabilizer, thumb screws, filament guide, heatsinks on all motors, extruder fan, controller fan, heatsinks on motherboard, Y rod pillow block, USB and Power on/off switch, fully calibrated including trimpot tuning. Am I missing anything?

The SD needs to be plugged in directly to a computer USB port... no hubs, I believe this is mentioned somewhere in either SD's site or the arduino forums.

Plugged into my keyboard usb ports, or my monitor's usb ports, it works fine. Those are essentially hubs too.

I wonder if it's because I have I have it going. SD > hub > monitor > computer. Maybe too many jumps?

My tower is so far away from my SD, the cord won't reach. Which is why I have it plugged into the monitor.

I can try a usb extension cord to eliminate the monitor

You'd likely need a powered hub, Photog.

This is a crowd funding thing that I'm running: http://www.gofundme.com/bvi140 It's for pretty selfish reasons tongue

Yes, an independently powered hub works fine. I currently have my SD3 and 3DR Delta both plugged into the same powered hub that connects to my desktop computer. Running two instances of Repetier host I can run different jobs on both printers at the same time and still have enough processing power to work in CAD while both printers are running.

Re: USB Hub W/ Switches (Need Help!)

This USB hub has spot for AC adapter but didn't come with one. How do I know which voltage and amps to get?

USB is 5V, amperage will only draw what it needs so get as large as you want to spend.
