Topic: Thermal cement application?

Mornin'

Not quite happy with crapton tape wrapping around my E3D so I thought thermal cement would be a more logical option.
Are there any protocols that I should observe whilst applying it? Or steps that need to be followed to eliminate air-gaps in the themistor hole?

My plan currently is to apply a small amount into the hole, press the thermistor in then apply some more just over the top to form a small mound a little like the original solidoodle's.

Anyway, advice would be wonderful smile
Cheers!

What is your plan for removal when the thermistor fails?

Yep wink

I wonder if there isn't a way around that though?  Maybe it it could still be yanked out or something.

Hmmm from what I've learned it seems the only viable option for removable would be chipping away at the stuff gradually, but even then one probably could remove it all without damaging the block.
I suppose i'll have to improve my kapton-ing skills.

Somewhere is a post that adrian did about how to do it right.  Basically pull the heat cartridge out wrap several times with the thermistor in place then cut the hole for the cartridge.  That's how I do it and it looks clean and holds well.

Re: Thermal cement application?

So Serin.... what kind/brand of cement are you thinking about using? most 'cements' can be dissolved by various substances the main thing is to pick one that does not harm the heater block.

Re: Thermal cement application?

Here is a thread by Adrian that shows a how he assembles a similar hotend ---> http://www.soliforum.com/topic/5494/how … d-hotends/

Not to mention that delicate thing called the thermistor smile

Probably this stuff if I decide it's worth it, Ronsii.

Now if the rest of us would just be as meticulous as Adrian. smile  It just seems to me I read somewhere that fire cement was used successfully.  I just can't find the post.

Re: Thermal cement application?

I used firecement on my E3d's smile

Re: Thermal cement application?

The Selleys fire cement works ok - but if you go >230°C on a regular basis it will become very brittle. Its good for a few weeks at a go and I used to use it before I settled on the process I outlined in that thread and it does work fine - but I got sick of thermistors falling out when I was rough with the cables after a few weeks of use...

In fact if you were near Canberra - I have a 98% full tub of the stuff I'd part with...

Re: Thermal cement application?

Thanks for the offer, Adrian.
Unfortunately for me I'm down in Melbourne.
I think at this point I may just follow the procedure and materials outlined in your thread, seems most logical.

This is the exact reason why I did not use High Heat JB Weld. I just took the time to wrap the thermistor around the block, inserted the heating element, then wrapped kapton around the two tightly.
Thermistor no longer moves.
