Topic: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

Hello.

I am interested in this filawinder made by Ian Johnson to use with my homemade extruder.
But I wonder how fast the winder is able to wind. That it works with 24"/min is obvious but how about 200"/min ?
Is the motor able to keep with this pace ?

Re: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

Going off mine I would say no. Mine starts struggling around 30" a minute.  However I do have the 15 rpm motor and I think a faster one is available.

Are you extruding 200" a minute already?  If not you may want to think about slowing it down some.  Doing it the way of the filastruder where extrusion happens more from melt instead of pellet shear and high pressure may have a hard time keeping a consistent diameter with extrusion happening that quickly.  Not to mention dealing with plastic coming out that fast with winder etc is going to be challenging

Thats just my opinion

Re: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

The motor as shipped won't go fast enough, but you can get faster motors in the 37mm gear motor form factor.  You might need something closer to 250-300 rpm for 200"/min.  I don't know how well the rest of the winder will operate at that speed.  It will probably be a challenge to get the extrusion set up and stable.

Re: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

The diameter is consistent at that speed. I am extruding an ABS/PC blend at 265 deg C.
I havn't tested the machine with a slower speed. All in all I am very satisfied with the outcome.

Maybe the transmission of the winder motor could be changed so that the spool runs faster. Maybe even omit the gears at all.

Re: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

Forget the winder can you give more details on the extruder itself?

Re: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

Even if the motor could keep up with what your doing I seriously doubt the light sensors/arduino could react fast enough to keep you spooling for very long... and as Ian said getting your loop setup is hard enough for us slow pokes for you its going to be very interesting.

I think if I were in your shoes I would by a winder set my extruder up to extrude onto floor (calibrate correct height to hit your diameters).  Then after I've extruded a couple pounds worth use the winder on manual and wide open to wind it.  You will probably want to include a filament wiper or similar into the winding process somewhere.

Seems like it would be a lot less hassle and if your extruding at that speed I can only assume your planning on making large amounts at a time.

Re: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

If you're smart enough to scratch build your own extruder running 200"/min, shouldn't you be capable of modifying a winder to pick up the slack?  Smells fishy to me.

Re: Filawinder - Maximum speed ?

I would say he's probably capable of modifying it, but perhaps there's an alternate design he had in mind he'd rather use instead of modifying the winder?  Especially since at 200" per minute there might be a water bath involved...

I'm interested in a filawinder with a capacity of 17 meters per minute
