Topic: First extruded filament not sticking.

So everything with my SD2 is working fine rarely get a full print not sticking or curling too much, but without fail, every time i print the first 30mm approx doesn't adhere to the bed.  After it sorts itself out everything else sticks nicely.

To solve this i just always printed with a skirt and pulled up whatever didn't stick with some tweezers and then left it to finish the print.  But now I've gone and added an extruder fan, which improved my prints, but means i cant get in there to pull out the first failed part of the extrusion.

Doesn't make a difference if I use a skirt or brim or both, that first bit always fails to adhere.  Using ABS, stock everything except added a glass bed with hairspray, nice and level. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Jackson.

Re: First extruded filament not sticking.

Maybe adjust the Z stop so the Extruder is a little closer to the bed?
Also it'd be handy if you posted the temps you're using smile

This is a crowd funding thing that I'm running: http://www.gofundme.com/bvi140 It's for pretty selfish reasons tongue

Re: First extruded filament not sticking.

I have the same on my SD4. Unfortunately I cannot help you, but I'm wondering why you bother to go in and remove the skirt before the print is finished? Leaving the skirt there makes no difference in my prints.

Re: First extruded filament not sticking.

Temps are 195 and 100.  I pull up the skirt, as when it is not attached to the bed it will frequently get caught on the nozzle and pulled into the print.

Re: First extruded filament not sticking.

Squish that first layer a little more by adjusting your Z-height.  The width of the first lines it puts down should be two - three times the nozzle diameter.  So in your case .8 to 1 mm.  Also in your profile decrease first layer height (I use .2963 for first layer and all others).   Brand of hairspray matters I like Aqua-net.
Hope this helps.

and if all those tips don't quite get it to 100 percent sticking try slowing the first layer to 30 or 50 percent speed.

+1 to wardjr and Serin. I had this problem until I read a post (I believe BY wardjr) and my problem is almost obliterated.

Re: First extruded filament not sticking.

Decreasing the first layer height to .2980 seemed to somewhat sort it out.  To minimise the chance of it happening and wrecking prints i designed a new fan shroud that has a bit more space underneath to allow me to get in there and pull out any loose filament.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll just keep on tweaking settings now.
