Re: Can't get ABS to stick to glass!
I mix abs pellets into acetone, a slury. I brush it on a mirror print bed. I do this while the bed is hot, only 80c. I literally need to scrape and hammer my parts off the bed even after it cools to ambient.

After changing the brand of hairspray I'm using, and increasing the first layer width the 175% of .3, it sticks. Rock solid. Like others who use the hairspray method, I have to remove the glass and let it cool down to pop the object off.
Thanks for all of the tips and help everyone!
Glad it is working for you!
For anyone having problems in the future who may check this thread, what did you switch to?
For hairspray, look for Acrylates Copolymer or Vinyl in the ingredients. I don't see any reason to clean the bed between prints if you are just going to reapply the hairspray. Subsequent layers of hairspray and ABS residue are only going to improve the stick.
I think I'm going to have to change the spray next, this sounds too easy to be me mucking up the layers!

I could have sworn I'd replied to this... I switched to Finesse Self Adjusting Firm Hold hairspray. Works like a charm. I changed my first layer width back to 100%, and it still sticks to the hairspray, so that must be what it was. I gave the glass plate a couple of good initial sprays, and now just a light spray every once and awhile to refresh things.
@ggunners and knowack - The purple elmer's glue stick worked great for me as well. I used a little too much the first time and had a heck of a time getting the parts off. But it's worked wonders and it's cheap too. Thanks again for this tip.
Hairspray. I use that plus glass and it works perfectly, almost always.
if its not sticking with glass and hairspray you almost always have to move thae nozzle closer.
Rave 4x mega has all the good sticking stuff. acrylates copolymer, vinyl neodecanote copolymer, and polyurethane 14.

I print on glass and once it is removed from the bed, it cools in about 2 minutes and the parts pop right off. You can hear the plastic shrink and come loose. Having 2 sheets of glass, lets you keep printing without letting everything cool down.
@Ggunners. Thanks again. I acctually have 3 glass pieces and started doing just that. Well I still like the painters tape on the glass. But for about week or so now, a light coat of glue stick is doing a fantastic job.
Just changed brand of hairspray to Tresemme Freeze Hold (black can from woolies in Aus) and it's working much better.
Method:
Nice thick layer onto gently abraded glass
Cooked for a while on the heated bed
Brief spray between prints to top up where the outline was
Bed needs to cool a bit before the print comes off
Still using 3mm brim
Haven't done anything phenomenally long yet, but it's much easier than it was. Original spray was coming away with the prints, which was pretty useless.
If you're struggling with spray, change brand, look for different ingredients on the list. "[insert long organic chemistry formal name here]-copolymer" is a good sign.
Just took a chunk out of my glass last night trying to get one off that I'd left to cool and forgot about... Looks like I've got no more sticking problems now. Might ditch the brim now it's in no danger of peeling up. ![]()
That's strange it should be loose if you let it cool. Are you printing on glass?
Yup, boro glass plate.
Yeah, it was a bit strange. I left the thing to cool off, and then forgot about it for >24hrs. It would have slowly cooled from 100C to room temp and then sat for hours. When I attempted to remove it (still room temp), it was stuck so well that in my levering the stuff off (part was destroyed) a chip came out of the glass. Could barely get a purchase on the brim in places.
In retrospect, I probably should have been more patient, let it soak in water to get the hairspray off, then tried acetone to weaken the ABS.
Using Tresemme freeze hold as above. Quite different to the red can...

That is some serious stickage. Maybe could have run the plate under cold water. You don't want to have to go through that again.
I have peeled chips out of most picture frame glass that I have used. Sometimes the print does it by itself. The print will cool, pop loose, and lift easily off the glass with a little sliver stuck to the bottom. It's never happened to me with borosilicate though.
I'm still getting great results with 1 layer of 3m blue painters tape on cheap mirrors and a thin coat of the purple glue stick. I've had a few parts sit for about 10-12 hours and still be hard to pull off. I'm sure I would have if it weren't for the tape. Being new to this I like having that little buffer between my nozzle and anything that could damage it. I'll try rinsing it under water next time I have a real sticker. I've found that the glue stick washes away better with warm water.
I can't thank you all enough for all of the tips. They've been a huge help.
