Re: Guitar body

I join my parts by just using a q tip soaked in acetone on one surface until it looks fairly wet, this allows for some play in aligning the bits and secures it damn tight.
Make sure to hold them together while the dry, it should only take a few minutes per bit.

This is a crowd funding thing that I'm running: http://www.gofundme.com/bvi140 It's for pretty selfish reasons tongue

Re: Guitar body

I agree with serin.
I use an acetone saturated paper towel for wiping and smoothing. Do NOT add too much, or be too conservative. Too much could could warp the potential bonding (air pockets depending on ambient conditions), whereas too little may be too brittle.
If you have not experimented with smoothing, I recommend it with some stuff off if thingiverse rather than ruining your guitar. I JUST started experimenting with acetone smoothing and bonding. ABS filaments react to acetone differently than one another. So use a controlled experiment with your printed filament to see how well it bonds for the best results.

Re: Guitar body

For smoothing SMALLER parts, I drop the part into a paint bucket with some acetone. I lower the part with earlier said aluminum risers and close the lid. To speed up the process, I put it in my bathroom sink, heat the water to the hottest, then close the drain and let the water rise until the moment the paint can starts to float. I then weight it down (with a French onion dip jar with some ABS slurry) so the parts do not fall into the acetone.
Said parts are: Lawsy's cable chain, mk4/5 extruders, Boz's E3D extruder, anti-backlash brackets, Y axis pillow brackets, and even personal designs.

While I take 45 minutes so hot water vapor smooth SD filament, an mk5 I received so graciously from wardjr took less than 30 minutes of room temp smoothing with Octave filament.
I'm just trying to drive home the difference of brand of filament, and even the batch makes a difference.

Re: Guitar body

great design.   have you considered mounting the neck to a partial wood extension, like a thru neck?  that would put all the string tension straight thru the neck and not stress the printed portions.. just an idea.  keep truckin..

Re: Guitar body

It will be very interesting to see how people modify an open source printed guit-fiddle.
I have seen many projects on Soliforum as well as sites like Thingiverse, and this one is certainly up there for sure.

I hope I can get some time to add to this soon!
