Topic: Guitar body

as Promised to Joel here is a little write up on a project that im undertaking. A while back I saw this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWa8sEgpOrM and being a guitar player myself it got me wanting to design my own guitar and 3d print it, unfortunately I do not have a big enough printer, but I found out that my old high school got a printer that was big enough for the i guess prototype of my guitar. My first guitat body is gonna be 10"x10" I know thats small but its just big enough to accommodate a single coil pick up and bridge without sacrificing sound or string tension. So on to the design,
first try

fixed design
I screwed up the first time on what I wanted it to look like I realized it came out looking like rib cages rather than spider webs. I will update you when I get it printed a co worker goes to my old high school and is in the shop with the 3d printer so he will be printing it for me. only reason why im not doing it myself is because my printer is the sd2 so it has a smaller print bed. Forgot to mention the webs go completely threw the guitar it will be 100% hollow. Also forgot to mension, being that i have a lot of friends who play guitat for this project i already got a gibson sg neck that will work on how i want to mount it, and a kramer single coil pick up that my connection has to still get for me. I will update as the project continues

I was thinking today the only to pieces that I need to keep completely solid are the bridge and the pick up housing so I was wondering if I put the stl up here can someone help me separate the file in 4.5" sections were as I can put it back to gather like legos or in a way were it wont come back apart so that I can print it off of my solidoodle 2?

If you post the SW file someone might be able to help out. The easiest way might just be to cut it up using netfabb then glue it back together. ABS bonds well when you use super glue or abs glue.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

I hope @jonbondy sees this as he has been printing guitar bodies for a while (though I think he uses his Aluminatus rather than Solidoodles).

that's pretty cool I knew its been done on other printers before I don't think its been done on a solidoodle yet I could be wrong though

so i figured out how to split the file thanks to youtube and here are some shots once i get more plastic i will print it on my sd2 since i fixed it

what neck are you using? when i got my printer, one of the first things i was asked, "can you print a guitar?" lol. i did print a proto-type replacement tail stop for my '72 SG.
keep us posted. looks like a cool project

im actually using a gibson sg or epiphone not sure all I know is it was off an sg I will also be using 1976 kramer pickups

Gibson has the sharp horns/corners on the headstock, on the Epi's the corners are cut off. The only Epiphones that had the Gibson style headstock were the early Japanese made ones. All the newer Korean made models have the corners cut off. THis applies to Les Paul as well as SG models

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...

AnyCubic Photon, Shining 3D EinScan-S & Atlas 3D scanners...
...and too much time on my hands.

I appreciate the info appon seeing this I know its a gibson only down side I need 2 tuning machines if I buy real gibson ones its 80$ for a set but I only need 2 the cheap chinese clones go for about 15$ a set I have everything else

update printed another small piece today yes I know one piece is larger I have to reprint it I changed the measurements after I printed it to save plastic/ time now though you can see the shape coming together

What tuning are you planning on setting it up for?

strings wise? just gonna be a standard 6 string i always play with thicker strings though I usually get the 0.013 set so thats what I did

I have been working on a design for printing a neck. Hope to get around to mapping it on my vacation this week.
If it works, I know who to contact for a control test!
