Re: Guitar body

I found some on Thingiverse I may try. But I'm wondering if I could make it work without a truss rod if with a high infill?
I WILL, however, pick up an Earvana nut.

My design will be for 7 string. If it works, I will do an 8 for sure, but it will be able to be modified for 6 fairly easily. Since I have a collapsing TonePros bridge, I am going to measure that and enter it into Sketchup. Once I get that all dialed in, I'll be working on the printed neck.
I will keep you up to date for sure

Re: Guitar body

The truss rod isn't there to provide strength for the neck, it's there to provide counter tension.
Your chances of succeeding without one are pretty slim... Almost nil I'd say.
At the very very least I'd be building in some Carbon fibre rods.

This coming from someone who used to build guitars on a regular basis.

This is a crowd funding thing that I'm running: http://www.gofundme.com/bvi140 It's for pretty selfish reasons tongue

Re: Guitar body

There are tuners on thingiverse, but I think that due to the tension, metal will be required. I prefer 7 and 8 strings, so I know the tension becomes more problematic...my 8 has dual truss rods for a reason, you know? smile
But I think printing the tuners would be ok for emergency situations, but Sperzel in the long run

that is true I've always wanted an 8 string but they are so much money my buddy just picked one up for 1200 and thats the cheap side

Re: Guitar body

Coming together!

I bought my ESP/LTD H308 brand new for about $700. But don't buy ESP. I had two 7s and one 8 I had to ship back due to serious flaws such as raised frets, chunks of wood missing, strap knob holes drilled in the wrong spot, etc.
Check out Ibanez. But I always highly recommend, especially when dealing with extended range guitars, to gut the EMGs out and install Dmarzio D-Activators..they make a world of difference!

And I would greatly appreciate an stl. I will keep it confidential as I don;t know your future intention for this design. smile

Re: Guitar body

Are you going to glue everything at the end for strength?

Also, it might be a great candidate for acetone smoothing for strength and aesthetics.

yup I will be jb welding everything together for extra precaution because of tension and how do you smoth something this large

Re: Guitar body

Once assembled, you can smooth by hand with a rag dipped in acetone.
I think I will JB Weld the segments, smooth the creases, and maybe toss on a wood veneer. I'm a sucker for spalted maple and various Aussie woods.
Expensive, though.

I want to see yours when you finish it as well compare the two good idea with the rag and acetone there are 3 peices you will need to adjust the pegs on the the 2 pieces next to the pickup housing and the neck plate other than that it should all snap in place

through saddle figured there wouldnt be as much tension on the body that way

nope just whatever I desire at the time I guess still need to fix the neck plate pegs and then re print that then I need to jb weld it together wire it up string it up and we are good to go I was thinking making this open sorce on thingiverse good idea?

Re: Guitar body

After a conversation with wardjr, I reflected on my DIY smoothing station I set up. I made aluminum risers to of course lift the prints over the acetone. I had originally bonded the risers together with JB Weld, then put it into a vice to cure over the weekend. The JB only held up to about 20 minutes of acetone vapor at room temp.

While acetone would perminently bond ABS, the combination of both may not be a wise idea.
You COULD try it. But once you add the string tension, it may fall apart and force you to take it back apart, file off any remnants of JB, then bond via acetone.

It would certainly get you a bunch of attention! And many people, like me, would be thankful for the printable guitars. wink
Just remember to keep track of your process so people don't get confused during assembly; should you toss it on thingiverse. You could always try a pay-per-print site and make a little dough off of it, though I haven't tried them yet. Heard mixed reviews.

good idea i dont know any other than shapeways and from what I got you have to order the print in order for people to order files from you

thank you for the info what would be the best way to bond with the acetone just wet both parts then put together let dry? or whip the top with a rag?
