Topic: Designing your own support structures

Hi i have been trying to print out my model, it requires support in two or three areas but slic3r is making a bit of a hash of it and adding support in horizontal holes that are only 2mm in diameter and other silly quirks.

So I've given up... So how do I best design a support structure? Do I need to use say minimum wall thickness of 0.42?

Any pointers would be great? Its mainly for horizontal overhangs. I have tried to design most cutouts running through my model to have a 45 degree pitch on the roofs to avoid requiring support but some parts this is just not possible.

Kind regards

Re: Designing your own support structures

Use slic3r 1.0+ ; preferably 1.0RC3 if you aren't - The support system is completely re-written, and it does a better job than KissSlicer now (empirical evidence and also many other blogs...)

Its entirely differently behaved to the <1.0RC versions...

I would be very surprised if with slic3r 1.0RC3 you still needed manual support structures...

I've got 1.0rc2 installed. Its creating a kind of tab external to the model, i presume its meant to snap off but its spoiling the external surface.
I'll try dig out a photo.

Try to just change the interface layer gap size and the spacing.. also moving it to 45° angle to the model can help... (all this should be on the Support tab...)

My favorite still tends to be MeshMixer 2.0. Though, it's only useful for particular rare cases when automatic support isn't enough or efficient.

Here is a post I made a while ago, when Slic3r support wasn't really working, but it's still pertinent today.

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...
SD3 printer w/too many mods,  Printrbot Simple Maker Ed.,  FormLabs Form 1+
AnyCubic Photon, Shining 3D EinScan-S & Atlas 3D scanners...
...and too much time on my hands.
