Topic: Heated bed insulation

Hey everyone.

I recently acquired a solidoodle 4 for use in my home.

I noticed that the insulation on the bottom bears a striking resemblance to asbestos.
It's stringy, it's dusty, it's disturbed every time the Z axis moves and I've got kids, so I'm trying to do my due diligence to make sure that it's not asbestos.

Does anyone know what the insulation on the bottom of the heated bed is actually made of and if it's safe for use around kids?

I am not sure it's exact composition but it's not asbestos.  Most likely some form of fiber glass.

Re: Heated bed insulation

My insulation keeps coming loose and drooping somewhat.  I have certain areas of my printbed where ABS has difficulty sticking.  I'm thinking there's a connection.

Anyone else experience something similar?

Re: Heated bed insulation

It's just standard fibreglass fire wool. And unlikely to be the primary cause of poor adhesion... that's far more likely to be uneven bed or contaminants on the bed surface as aluminium has more than enough thermal conductivity to equalise itself over a few patches... . The insulation acts as a tiny helper, not a requirement.

Anyway - re the question from the OP - It is not asbestos.

It is fiberglass.
