Topic: Best method for powering mods

What is the best method for powering additional systems on a Solidoodle? A hot end fan can be wired to headers on the board, but I haven't seen consensus on other mods.

Also, what are guidelines / suggestions for powering different devices from cooling fans to steppers?

I added this thing to mine:

I've got a separate 12V power cube for it at the moment, but when I finally get around to upgrading my power supply, I'm just going to run the connectors in the box from a line off the new PSU.

depends on the mod... for low power stuff like fans just jump off of a header if you're talking about high power draws then it would depend on how much of your supply if left.

You wouldn't happen to know how much the sd3 draws as stock would you?  I want to know how much power I have to work with without overdrawing and damaging anything.  (mostly just thinking about fans for right now)

Re: Best method for powering mods

Before I made all my mods I put a Kill-A-Watt on my SD3 with it's original everything, and I had basically 110-115W while heating up the bed and extruder simultaneously, then it averaged about 75-80W while printing.

Assuming the AC adapter was only about 70-75% efficient, then the printer actually peaks around 85W, and averages less than 60W while printing.

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...
SD3 printer w/too many mods,  Printrbot Simple Maker Ed.,  FormLabs Form 1+
AnyCubic Photon, Shining 3D EinScan-S & Atlas 3D scanners...
...and too much time on my hands.

And with the math, measuring with the peak 85, about 7.8 amps while running, giving us 5.5 left over.   i think i can add a lot of .07a fans ... lol   thanks for the info, now i feel better
