Topic: current ptintrboard

A bit confused, I am getting  a new printrboard from SD. I was told  it had the latest firmware. So I guess it should work as is when I get it?I am going to use a 12v 40w cartridge heater.

It will be the latest firmware as far as SD is concerned and it should work fine.  That being said there is always better firmware than what SD uses available.

For a hi tech company, you would think they would keep up with the times.I'll give it  a go and see how it does .lol Going to get it today, 6 days from NY?  Must have come the LONG way

What is better with custom firmware?

So many things,  that being said there are users here that are way more qualified than I am to answer your question.
Like the guys that actually wrote it and continue to update it.  Some of them are users right here on this forum.  SD just doesn't send with the latest updates.

Re: current ptintrboard

ok I have the printrboard hooked up .I opened RH and was able to connect. Bare with me please, on the config/Firmware EEprom config tab, that is greyed out, does that mean there is no firmware on the board?  Also in the past it showed what firmware I had in RH log. This is a new board from SD, they say  Solidoodle Motherboard  comes fully assembled and tested.

Re: current ptintrboard

Make sure your drivers are correct. If you dont see the message when you connect on the log showing Solidoodle yada yada and URL, then you did not really connect.

Re: current ptintrboard

oh well, still no luck.Anybody on win 8 with a Printrboard? I even tried it on xp  still no go.On xp it recognized the board but not on win8. I read SD info on how to install the drivers on win 8 but to no avail.

Re: current ptintrboard

Sounds frustrating...
I wish I was an expert with windows 8.
All I can say is verify that you have it on the correct com port and that the proper driver is installed.  I just went through this with a newer printer board using XP I finally got it.  I sold that printer to a friend and I am headed over to his place right now and I think he is using Windows 8.  I will ask him and report back in about a half hour.  In the mean time don't go spending money on stuff you don't need.

Re: current ptintrboard

well it connected on xp ok, buttt I don't have bed or heater voltage.Other controls work tho. That was the same problem on the SANG board.I must be doing something wrong.yea really frustrated as I have potential customers that might want some items.

windows 8 sucks 7 is way better. i have a surface tablet with win 8 RT and it sucks even more.

Re: current ptintrboard

Another thing I thought was odd, the  extruder fan was wired backwards on the board. I had to swap the +/-wires on the fan for it to work. The fan is12v but when I unplug the 12v supply and just have the usb plugged in, it still runs.Another odd event.

Re: current ptintrboard

So:

Win 8, there is the 'need admin rights to install' thing, but that does not sound like the problem.

There is also another thing I have noticed between different machines is the 'reset on connect' thing.

Goto Config -> Printer Settings -> Connection tab -> Reset on Connect set to disabled.

Re: current ptintrboard

Just a FYI. I finally got the Printrboard to work in XP and Win 8.1.Now I have to fine tune everything.Next step is E3D.

Re: current ptintrboard

lol got me.Just fiddled around with things and bingo it worked.OH I did have a dead ext  thermistor, that may have caused all the problems, lucky I had a spare.

Let me know what you think of the newer firmware.

Re: current ptintrboard

Just a thought, is there any way to read the firmware on the board?

Re: current ptintrboard

If you have an ISP (or a spare arduino you could turn into one) you can read the existing flash and eeprom. Here's all my discoveries about fooling with the firmware:

I've been using my AVR ISP mkII programmer I had from some atmel projects a while back, so I haven't tried the teensy bootloader.
