Topic: Solidoodle 4 First Look

So, i received my SD4 yesterday and I've had several questions about it and i have some questions about it myself. Because there isn't much information on the forum about the SD4 yet, i hope this thread can help out the new owners like myself.

First off, the enclosure is nice. It helps to keep in the heat and looks like an appliance next to my computer. It is not airtight so im not sure how much good the filter actually does. Speaking of the filter, its very thin and is held onto the outside of the fan mounted on the inside of the case. Fumes aren't much of an issue but i dont think the fan + filter has much to do with that. By looking at the filter, I doubt it is capable of blocking ABS fumes. The extrudser is still the same old acrylic jigsaw but hopefully the new one will start appearing on all the Solidoodles soon. One problem that ive ran into, is calibrating the machine for perfect circles. If you've watched the perfect circles video, youll remember that it requires loosening the y motor. Well, the case is in the way. The case is held on by zip ties on the inside and screws on top so i didn't feel like tearing it apart quite yet. For now, i plan on just making sure the belts are equal tension. There are hose clamps on the ends of all the smooth rods. Can someone shed some light on what these are for? Thankfully i have virtually no backlash or banding at the .3 level but that may change when i start with .1 things. Ive attached some pictures of the interior for those that are curious. Overall, I'm happy with the SD4. If anybody has any questions or wants more pictures just let me know! smile

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

I think your pictures are just fine.  The hose clamps keep the rods from sliding out of the hole that holds them.  It really looks like an SD 3 inside.  As far as adjusting the Y motor as long as the belt is tight it should be just fine.  Equal tension on the belts is much more important.  The video only has you do that so you can eliminate the drag from the motor to give a better feel for how everything is traveling.  You can get the same feel by loosening the set screws on the long belts.  Once everything is sitting nice and even and square tighten the set screws.
Hope this helps.

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

It's a SD3 with a case (zip tied) on it.

Lipstick on a pig. Crazy.

Edit: I'm sure that fan/filter is worthless. I have a 1/10th HP bilge blower exhausting to atmosphere out of an airtight case and still occasionally catch a whiff of ABS.

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

The hose clamps hold the rods in place.

Edit: Beat me to it. Sad that acrylic is still there.

PS: If its just screws and zipties, pull it off already. Its an SD3, you will most likely be modifying it in the near future anyway. If they riveted it on, that would be another matter, but zipties are easy to put back on.

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

Thanks for the pictures. Are the four big holes in the back to hold the filament holder? Overall it looks good. I just need to find a place to put one.

Looks like you got some good prints setting on top of the case.

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

Yes they are. When I opened the box I noticed that no spool holder was included. I only got the PVC. I've emailed them though. It's very hard to print without out it. I've been cutting pieces that I think will be enough for a print but most of the time I run out midprint or the filament gets tangled.

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

Hopefully they will send you the holder. It also looks like you are missing the rubber grommet where the filament passes into the case. Not sure it they are putting it on the production models but I saw it on some promo shots.

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

I've printed a filament guide for that hole now. I didn't even notice the gromet in the pics

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

until your spool holder arrives, you could try the pause function in repetier for when you are running out of filament mid print...?

Hit the "Pause" button then slide a piece of paper underneath the nozzle to stop ooze, lower the bed 10 mm, retract 30mm to remove filament, replace filament, extrude 30mm, raise the bed 10mm, hit resume... bit of a workaround but works well...all the best!

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

Another thing I have tried that worked pretty good is wind some filament carefully in a flat box and cut a hole it . Sorta like phone wire comes in ( pull box)

SD3, E3D hotend, linear bearing on x/y axis',pillow block bearing on y conneting rod, ball bearngs on front y axis, fan on y stepper motor.

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

That's a good idea! Thanks for the tip...now to find a box...

I got that to work 1 time but the otger time I tried it, the old piece of filament was down out of reach of the drive gear and when I added the new filament, instead of pushing the old stuff on through, it just went beside of the old stuff behind the acrylic and I had a lot of manual extruding and retracting to do before it finally fed through...I hadn't though of paper for helping the ooze though, thanks!

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

The same extruder?
That's very strange, I just received an e-mail from Solidoodle saying that they have redesigned the extruder.  Could it be a minor redesign, or maybe there's something else in the redesign?
Also, how easy was it to get it calibrated and set up?  Because I'm looking for a printer that I don't have to fuss around with after my home made RepRap Mendel died due to... parents *grumble grumble*

Re: Solidoodle 4 First Look

I followed the calibrations from the wiki page and i was able to get outstanding prints within a couple hours. Haven't had to do much else to it.
