The same extruder?
That's very strange, I just received an e-mail from Solidoodle saying that they have redesigned the extruder. Could it be a minor redesign, or maybe there's something else in the redesign?
Also, how easy was it to get it calibrated and set up? Because I'm looking for a printer that I don't have to fuss around with after my home made RepRap Mendel died due to... parents *grumble grumble*

Yes they are. When I opened the box I noticed that no spool holder was included. I only got the PVC. I've emailed them though. It's very hard to print without out it. I've been cutting pieces that I think will be enough for a print but most of the time I run out midprint or the filament gets tangled.

Its an SD3, you will most likely be modifying it in the near future anyway. If they riveted it on, that would be another matter, but zipties are easy to put back on.

I think your pictures are just fine. The hose clamps keep the rods from sliding out of the hole that holds them. It really looks like an SD 3 inside. As far as adjusting the Y motor as long as the belt is tight it should be just fine. Equal tension on the belts is much more important. The video only has you do that so you can eliminate the drag from the motor to give a better feel for how everything is traveling. You can get the same feel by loosening the set screws on the long belts. Once everything is sitting nice and even and square tighten the set screws.
Hope this helps.

Bob

So, i received my SD4 yesterday and I've had several questions about it and i have some questions about it myself. Because there isn't much information on the forum about the SD4 yet, i hope this thread can help out the new owners like myself.

First off, the enclosure is nice. It helps to keep in the heat and looks like an appliance next to my computer. It is not airtight so im not sure how much good the filter actually does. Speaking of the filter, its very thin and is held onto the outside of the fan mounted on the inside of the case. Fumes aren't much of an issue but i dont think the fan + filter has much to do with that. By looking at the filter, I doubt it is capable of blocking ABS fumes. The extrudser is still the same old acrylic jigsaw but hopefully the new one will start appearing on all the Solidoodles soon. One problem that ive ran into, is calibrating the machine for perfect circles. If you've watched the perfect circles video, youll remember that it requires loosening the y motor. Well, the case is in the way. The case is held on by zip ties on the inside and screws on top so i didn't feel like tearing it apart quite yet. For now, i plan on just making sure the belts are equal tension. There are hose clamps on the ends of all the smooth rods. Can someone shed some light on what these are for? Thankfully i have virtually no backlash or banding at the .3 level but that may change when i start with .1 things. Ive attached some pictures of the interior for those that are curious. Overall, I'm happy with the SD4. If anybody has any questions or wants more pictures just let me know!

edit: Jesus...sorry for the bad pics...ill try to fix them at some point
