Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

Mine didn't have the fan hole. I just tried to force the screw in. Didn't work so I taped mine of for now. Mine was warped so I'm not to concerned until I get another one printed.

I would just drill some small holes to get them started.

I'm not talking about the actual mounting holes for the screws, I'm talking about the exhaust port for the fan, it doesn't seem to be there when I load it in RH

The fan hole is designed with one layer in the rear to act as support just peal it away and the rest is open.  same for the thin lines where the fan mounts.  I wanted to print it on edge to keep it from warping.  Just print at .3 solid with a brim and it should be fine.

Your right just use a small drill to get them started.  I had them in there originally but they didn't seem to line up right with the fan so I just took them out.  Seemed like when they weren't lined up correctly it would really tweak the fan and I didn't want to break the fan.

Glad to help... If your wondering I have had great luck printing with this setup.  The other setup from 2n2r5 was much simpler to assemble but it's additional height and the extra mass of the bulldog created a lot of wobble.  That is the only reason I designed this one.  I have found that I still can't print as fast as I could with the SD extruder motor and the E3d.  That being said the quality is much better.  I don't know if you noticed but this was the 9th revision of this design so feel free to make any changes you want and post it.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

I've got everything setup and have been printing great for the past few days and I'm LOVING IT! I'm only having one slight issue with the setup with the E3D and that's the slight wobble, I was wondering if anyone had anything else that worked, I have a bracket on there now made of moldable plastic, and it's holds pretty well but there is still more wobble then I would like.

I am currently in the process of re-designing the whole thing.  I would like some input as to what you think should be changed.
I am also re-designing for lawsy's linear bearings.  That is what I am running right now and the wobble is gone.  I did tweak the mount for the SD carriage if you would like an update.
Edit:  The main problem is in the two blocks on the rear rod get them snug but not so tight they bind.  Also built in some support near the front.
Getting the center of gravity as low as possible is my goal.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

If you are using the original solidoodle carriage, I adapted this gadget from the original which didn't quite fit my printer:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:214112

It works wonders for my printer as you can see from the before and after pictures here:

http://home.comcast.net/~tomhorsley/har … gload.html

Of course, if the fan has moved enough, there might not be any place to hook the other end of the spring :-).

This is the mount for the Bulldog XL  with an E3D if you are using the stock SD carraige.

I spent some time last night reworking the design and here is what I came up with.  The biggest problem is the hole near the rear isn't quite big enough.  It doesn't allow the SD adjuster for the rear blocks to move up enough.  This prevents proper adjustment of that block.  To fix it I just used a hot knife to make the hole big enough.  I did change it and added a little support near the front.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

Awesome work I'll try the new revision and let you know how it works!  But the wobble that I'm really concerned with is from where the E3D connects to the bulldog. I can physically more it around like 5mm or so

Ohhh... you can use a piece of solid wire in the shape of a U that is is the right thickness to take up that play.  You definitely want to keep that from moving as it screws up your retraction and extrusion.  Put the wire underneath so the E3D is pushed closest to the drive gear.
I am glad the mount worked out for you.

So I printed the revision 10 and I love it it's great the supports help strengthen it up a lot and allow to drill a hole that lines up nice. Great work!!

Have we thought about doing a version that has the piece in between the bearings from Lawsy's carriage replacement?

It's already done and I'd be happy to send it to anyone that wants it.  I've been waiting for Adrian and 2n2r5 to test it out before I put it out there for everyone.   That being said I have been using it and am very happy with it.  The design eliminates the sandwich of layers and just snaps together.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

This is a carriage that works with the Bulldog XL and linear bearings in conjunction with lawsy's linear bearing mounts.
This will replace the stacked design with a simple snap into place carriage for the extruder only.  All credit goes to lawsy, adrian and 2n2r5 for getting the ball rolling.
Print it solid with no infill or support on its side at .3mm with a good brim.  The support is built in so some clean up is required.
Especially around the nut holders for the belt and the fan area.  most of the support will clean up well with a good razor.  You will have to drill small holes for the fan screws.
The FBCAR.stl is for the forward bearings and prints like an upside down U with the same settings and when complete should just snap into the main carriage. (do this after the rear bearings are on the rear rod and clipped into place).  Then just swing the carriage down onto the FBCAR that is clipped onto the forward rod. (even with the right side)
Happy Printing
