Topic: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

I have some very noticable moire after the upgrade.

what are you guys doing to alleviate this? I know we cant add new drivers, new stepper motor yes.... what about voltage/current adjustments.... ? if so how is it done?

anyone got a link to anything that would help - yes i did search first!!

many thanks up front as always....!

Re: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

Trimpot might help but, unfortunately, a DRV8825 is not an option with Printrboard.

Re: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

As an alternative to a 1/32 microstepping driver, you could get a .9 degree stepper motor for the extruder.  That would double the steps and help with moire.  Also adjusting the trimpot.  When I first put an E3D in, I had increased moire until I tweaked the pot.

Or do both!  I fixed mine with the driver, but will  be putting on the 0.9 motor soon as well.

Or you could buy a Bulldog XL 5:1 geared extruder that would also help.

I'll adjust the pot then take it from there...cheers!

Re: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

Well tried that and no improvement.. If any it is slight...

So to recap I have an sd3 with a printrboard.. So I cannot upgrade to 1/32 drivers without upgrading the board... Most folks seem to install the e3d and upgrade the drivers on their sang boards...

Has anyone installed the e3d with a printrboard and upgraded the extruder to 0.9?

Seems I'm caught Chasing my tail now... An upgrade to a hot end means I need a new power supply, new extruder and possibly new board !!!

So has anyone installed the 0.9 extruder and have a success story they can share? If not I'd rather replace the board and be done with it. A cheap upgrade is turning out to be expensive .. I hope it's worth the expense!!!

Re: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

E3D does not improve the moire. Its a much better hot end, but it produces the same moire when you leave everything else the same.

You can either :

1 replace the motherboard so you can use a 1/32 driver

2 replace the stepper with 0.9

3 replace the extruder assembly to the Maddog with the 5:1 gearing

Re: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

hi hazer,

E3D has introduced moire m8,,, not improved it lol.... hence my post .. The moire there before was obviously taken up by the brass barrels surface deviations.... moving to a high surface finish SS hot end has shown it up... I'm all good with why its happened...but thanks for comments though!!

I'm more wanting to see some pics of prints people have taken with printrboards and a 0.9 extruder... if anyone has..?

I'm swaying towards the bulldog xl geared extruder as it 'should' be better than 1/32 route and/or 0.9( however, I'm in the UK and I would need overseas shipping then import VAT etc...gets expensive)

so has anyone got any pics of either a 0.9 extruder with E3D OR a bulldog XL installed with an E3D they are willing to share.... both options on a printrboard..

just needing to compare the print quality.. and then choose the route...

thanks again!

Re: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

It isn't a great picture but the moire is all but gone and that was printed with E3D on a Bulldog using the very SD carriage it's on in the photo.

Re: E3D Moire on SD3 printrboard

Here is another one my printer was way out of calibration as I was trying to upgrade to linear bearings.

Nope but it is still 1/16 steps so that shouldn't affect that part.
