Topic: Broken extruder or skipping steps??

I added a mirror bed and an extruder fan, then calibrated my bed. That is all. Now my extruder is what I believe to be skipping step. I keep hearing clicks as I watch the "right bearing" (I'm a newbie, so sorry if it is the wrong term!) stop as the left is spinning.

Did I somehow break it? Is this a defect? But more importantly, is the fixable?!?!

Looks like a clog but I can't see the bearing well enough to tell if it is spinning.
Sure sounds like a clog too.

Good thing I'm a musician then! Haha I'll try to heat it up and throw a string through there. Thanks for the post...let you know how it goes

Good luck... seems as though there is a lot of clogging happening lately.
I really don't miss it since I switched to the E3D... Just a little nudge big_smile

Re: Broken extruder or skipping steps??

I'm eager to print a/several replacement parts, and E3D and MK5 are at the too of my list...as soon as I receive a spool of Proto-Pasta's high temp PLA; all my ABS prints turn out stringy if not mercilessly failed.
I figure I could put the high temp to test directly onto the extruder. If it works, great! If not, I can find other uses and create a productive thread.

Re: Broken extruder or skipping steps??

Wow. Your perimeter speed is really slow compared to your infill. It looks like the clicking is worse during infill, which leads me to believe that the fan you installed is cooling off the hotend when you need it to be hotter for faster infill speeds. What does your temperature look like?

Here is a stationary shot. I hit extrude from the manual control and the effect is completely random. Sometimes it flows perfectly, sometimes this happens. But again, this is a very recent issue. If the video doesn't pop up, here's a link http://vimeo.com/83310065
Temperature I use for this filament (JustPLA trans green) is 165-170. I know Solidoodles are off by about 30c, so those temps are as stated in RH. And speaking of RH, I was about to update my software last night (to 95D) until my 10 month old daughter got ahold of my mouse and X'd out of it! haha Might that be an issue or even a factor?
Thanks again for the help...you guys and this site are awesome!

Re: Broken extruder or skipping steps??

That temp is in the ballpark. Have you tried another PLA filament? The one time I ordered PLA, half the roll was good then the second half was very bad. Varying diameters and tons of kinks. I thought I had bad clogs because the stuff just would not get through the nozzle, but purging it out with ABS the nozzle was fine. It was just bad filament.

I have a spool of JustPLA and a spool of Makerbot and it is having the same problem on both. I'm afraid wardjr may be right about the clog. As a newbie, I was much more excited tearing out the jigsaw and replacing with an MK5 out of an act of tinkering instead of an act necesity and desperation. sad
PLUS, if something were to go wrong (missing/damaging pieces), I have no extruder replacements printed either than PLA tests.

Order the E3D and drop me a PM I'll send you an MK5 or better yet ask Tim to include one with the E3D big_smile

Re: Broken extruder or skipping steps??

Wardjr was dead on with the clog! The threaded shaft was about 80% clogged throughout. Much respect and thanks!!
I deeply appreciate the offer and I will keep you in mind. I just don't think I am at the skill level needed to upgrade to an E3D for awhile. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't take more than just a simple swapping process? Hardware and software corrections galore?
I'm about to reassemble my jigsaw extruder. I think it is both comical and unfortunate how there are videos on how to disassemble, but not REassemble!
