Topic: Noisy Stepper motor

My X-axis stepper has always been noisy when it turned. Thought it might be from the tension on the belt, but I loosened it completely and it's still pretty loud. Is this typical of what you guys have? Is there a way to fix it if it's not normal?

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Sounds normal to me.  My sounds about the same.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Mine was also doing that for a while, turned out I had the stepper chip voltage set too high.  There is a tutorial for setting it here:
http://www.solidoodle.com/how-to-2/trou … /#steppers
Be VERY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE BOARD EXCEPT WHERE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO.  I fried mine doing that.

By the way setting the correct stepper motor voltage also helps prints come out more accurately! BONUS

Thanks ford, ill give it a try.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Got all the voltages really really close. unfortunately it's still making the same noise. Oh well, at least I dialed the voltages in properly.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Heck, my motors often sound like they are playing a tune, especially printing things that need to change direction a lot. I keep wondering if there are people who design parts simply to get the motors to play tunes :-).

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Hey Muddtt,
This is what mine sounds like. I think mine is giving off louder noise? Anywho, I think it's the same problem.
My x-axis wasn't giving off this noise before, but now it is.

So it won't let me post any links, so just remove the space in front of the .com

I also already did the stepper motor and dialed in the numbers. still have the noise problem.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

You need a certain number of posts before you can do videos and links. I'll post your video for you. Not sure...haven't even figured out why mine is noisy. Maybe it's partially the nature of the design or stepper. Yours definitely sounds sicker than mine. I think I can live with mine. I would contact solidoodle about yours and send them your video. Let us know what they say.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

How tight is the belt in the carriage?
I had'have similar problems every now and then, but it seems to be less pronounced when the belts aren't very tight.

This is a crowd funding thing that I'm running: http://www.gofundme.com/bvi140 It's for pretty selfish reasons tongue

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Yikes! Mine play tunes, but they don't sound like grinding metal :-(.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Yeah, I just tested that theory out *SERIN* about 30 minutes ago,
I tried loose, tight, everything else nice.  But still the same sound sad

And yeah does sound like grinding metal..

Hey Muddtt,

soliforum .com/topic/3599/printer-squeaking

Another post couple pages down (7-10ish) I don't know if will work for us, but worth a shot?

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Mine is not the pulleys. I took the belt off completely and it still made the noise. Just the stepper rotating.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Yeah, same!  I'm thinking maybe the bearing or something is not in place.  I'm contacting support tomorrow morning.  Hopefully they will help me.  You should call as well then we can compare what they say.

Re: Noisy Stepper motor

Hey Muddtt!
Talked with solidoodle this morning,
They seemed to have fixed it.

Told me to switch the x and y plugs from the back and test to see if it's a board problem or something (can't quite remember :S) however after that they said to switch it back then go to the dial for the X axis and turn it off (counter-clockwise) then keep turning it clockwise while pressing a movement for the x axis until it starts to go and when it does. STOP.  Now test if it's moving more like the others. (my dial isn't at the 440 mark where it should its at like a 2 o'clock. (you'll see the dial with a line and 2 dots thats the arrow head for the dial)

I just did a test print and seems to be working smoothly now.  Weird.  Was I getting too much V for the stepper motor?  Can someone with knowledge of the board tell me how the dial works?

Thanks!  Muddtt I'll have a video for you if you want of the before and after sounds.
