Topic: So not every machine has Z banding?

I have been running my SD2 for a few days now and I don't see any Z banding. Is it a random problem on random machines?  Curious.

I think it has to do with how well and centered your z-rod was attached to the stepper.  My printer never seemed to have the z banding issue even though it had lots of other problems.

I didn't think I had z banding really until I started printing smaller layer heights. try just printing a 20mm Tube using spiral vase. that should show you if you have any.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

I ran an inch tall thin walled cylinder today at.1mm. Looks great!

Re: So not every machine has Z banding?

I didn't see Z banding in the beginning because my quality wasn't that good to begin with.  I had moire, backlash, not perfectly calibrated flow rate etc., so the z-banding wasn't noticeable.  Fixing other problems and printing smaller layers made it start to show up.

I found mine degraded as time went on. I found my first few prints in a box and they were fantastic, and the latest prints were pretty average. I soon after swapped to an m5 rod.

I found the same thing on mine.  I have done a few things to remedy the banding without replacing the rod yet but im thinking thats in my near future.  Im trying to get through another couple projects before i tear it down for a good rebuild.
