Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

When is the Press Release scheduled to come out?  Seems like Engadget is the only news site that got any information on it.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

It looks like they took a good bit of the upgrades that the community made and integrated them into the 4, but also added some nice things to it of their own.

It's a shame that the acrylic extruder is still there.  I was hoping that the jigsaw would be phased out. sad

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

Its an SD3 with a pretty enclosure. With the electronics on the inside. Same extruder, same carriage, same bushings and belts, same Z screw.

I guess Make magazine review didn't take to heart.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

It looks like the first mod will be to disable the case cooling fans and relocate the electronics to outside the case... hope the wiring is long enough...

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

Looks like a solid step in the right direction in the looks department, and an enclosure is sure going to help with print quality.  But changes that actually improve the print experience for the customer, performance, reliability?  Well, there's bed leveling screws on the bottom, a slightly better filament spool mount, and the enclosure.  And that's pretty much it.  This looks to me like it's literally an SD3 in a case.  So, a way to get people who balk at the SD3 to buy, but nothing new for anyone who already has one.

The fan is supposed to have an optional filter for microparticles.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

But what printers really need is a self-leveling bed :-). Which reminds me - I got some force sensitive resistors to experiment with. Maybe over the holiday I'll have time to see if they can really detect the nozzle hitting something like a shim I put on the printbed.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

Perhaps it's time for that spraypaint job I've been postponing since day one? smile

I remember the very first original-SD demo units were actually black:

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

So the PCB will be in the enclosre huh? I have the SD2 and had to put fans on the board outside to keep the steppers from skipping due to the drivers getting too hot, now you want to put inside a heated area? Not sure about that.  Are there fans in there or some other kind of cooling to keep the drivers from getting to hot to drive the steppers?

Like the screw wheel z height and the spool holder. Like others would like to see self-leveing bed.
Also why the kapton tape still.  Go glass with clip system for quick change.

All in all, not bad, but not great either. But hey at least your trying to get there.

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

I like the small improvements; bed and z-height thumbscrews, etc...these should be standard on all the machines.

But I do not think the snappy cover is worth a $200.00 premium.  Also, I like to have side access at times, so I would have gone with individual panels secured with magnets.

An $899.00 price would be more reasonable.  If I were in the market again, I would simply get the SD3.

SD2 - Stock - Enclosure - Heated Bed - Glass Plate - Auto Fire Extinguisher
Ord Bot Hadron - RAMPS 1.4 - Bulldog XL - E3D v6 - 10" x 10" PCB Heated Build w/SSR - Glass Plate

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

I wouldn't think the $200 price bump is just to cover the cost of the pretty add-ons. I think it is to cover the costs of retail support. It is going to be hard to sell something at a retail shop without a warranty.

I agree with the idea that the thumbscrews should be standard features though.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

The electronics aren't in the build area, it's in a separate chamber on the back with a fan.  The case has an actual back to it which extends beyond the back of the frame.

In addition to the thumbwheel and the leveling screws, I noticed that they ran the wire bundle from the extruder down to the bottom of the case so it no longer runs sideways into the Y belt.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 4

You also get a $15 toolkit.
