Topic: 3D Printing Ceramics By Extrusion

I've been looking into 3D printing as an option for creating custom mugs and other ceramic objects. From what I've seen, consumer level printers extrude clay, but services like Shapeways utilize a powder.

Can comparable results for ceramic objects be obtained using the extruding printers rather than a powder approach? Is there any reason the clay that is extruded by printers like Hyrel cannot be glazed and fired like any other item?

I've never done this, bit I think it is still clay, it has just been shaped by an extruder instead of hands - I don't think there is much difference other than possibly the composition of the clay being somewhat different for smoother extrusion, possibly requiring different times and temps for firing. I poked around on google once and found some web pages that say a porcelain mixture works best.
