Topic: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Hello all,
I'm an optician and an RC aircraft designer/modeler, and I'm going to be purchasing my first 3D printer soon.
I could really use some insight from the experts.

What I'm searching for:
6.25"X7"X5" minimum build area... I will be printing eyewear frames among other things.
Dual extruders, or ability to upgrade to dual without reinventing the wheel.
Ability to print ABS... I'd like to be able to print PLA and nylon as well.
Accuracy and finished surfaces are a priority... I'm not too worried about speed.
I prefer that it's not made of wood, but it's not a deal breaker either.
I won't mind assembling it at all, but I will need a full kit.  I don't want to be sourcing all the parts.
I won't mind fiddling with it to dial it in, but I'd prefer not to spend two hours a day on it.

The replicator 2X is at the very upper limit of my budget.  I'd prefer to stay below $2k.

So far I've been looking at the replicator 2X, and the Bukobot 8 v2 Dual.  Who am I missing?
It also appears that the Felix 3.0 will be available as a dual, but I'm really not interested in waiting on a new product.

I've been reading everything I can get my hands on, but I could sure use some first hand knowledge!

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

I don't have any first hand knowledge. This is a forum mainly for the solidoodle printers but I other users have suggested the Flash Forge with is a replicator clone IIRC.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

This printer gets reviewed well. Its a replicator clone.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

I've did find the Flash Forge, but the print area is just a bit small.  It's really close, but not quite there.  Other than that it looks great.

Any other ideas?

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

There's the MBOT Cube II
http://www.mbot3d.com/products/mbot-cube2

Though Make labeled it buyer beware (along with the Solidoodle): http://makezine.com/magazine/guide-to-3 … y-compare/

Also 3Dprinter4U Builder (Make says middle-of-the-road)

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

2n2r5... I know this is mostly a Solidoodle forum.  Is there a better forum I should be posting on?

I read through this year and last year's Make 3D Printer Buyer's Guide.  I know the RC Plane magazines are way off a lot of the time with their reviews.  Do you guys thing the Make reviews are pretty accurate?

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Hi midoco, While this forum started as mostly solidoodle it currently has members with a huge base of knowledge from differing brands and types of printers and in my traveling of the other forums this is probably the best one stop shop for everything smile however for type specific questions on certain printers it would usually be best to see if the printer maker supports a forum like makerbot or ultimaker to name a couple.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

The leapfrog creatr also has a dual extruder option (also reviewed middle...):
https://www.lpfrg.com/product/creatr/

I read last year's buyers guide before purchasing an SD3.  All I recall is that it solidified my choice (no pun intended) at the time.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Midoco - I didn't mean that you shouldn't post here but you might want to try posting over on the RepRap forums also.

http://forums.reprap.org/

I think the Make review for solidoodle is way off. They couldn't get theirs to work for some reason and they blamed it on a design flaw which frankly just isn't true. It don't know where that puts their reviews for other printers out there.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Thanks again for the advice guys!  It seems to me like the open, wood printers might be a little less consistent than an enclosed,  metal printer.  Have you guys seen this?

The Printrbot Plus V2.1 has been added to my short list. It seems they will be offering a 2 extruder update kit soon.  Does anyone have any hands on with one of these?

3d-oodler,
It doens't look like the MBOT is a dual.  Am I just missing it?
The Builder looks interesting, but two materials out of one nozzle sounds like a recipe for trouble to me.  What do you guys think?
The leapfrog looks okay.  Shipped to me it would be almost $2400 USD.  For that money I might be better off with a Replicator 2X.

Thanks again guys!
Michael

If you go here: http://www.mbot3d.com/products/mbot-cube2

See the drop-down in the upper right, where it says Version: Cube Single Head.  The Cube Dual Head is $200 more

I don't know enough about how it works to comment.  But there's a comment from the designed here that might be helpful:
http://3dprintingindustry.com/2013/11/1 … -extruder/

"Sven van Dam:
Mixing colors in this dual extruder with single nozzle is possible in the future with more compatible open source software. But the main reason I designed this nozzle at Code-P, is to make dual extrusion prints without the need to have two nozzles perfectly [aligned]. Also, because there is no second nozzle, the problem of a leaking nozzle has been disappeared.

Open source software like cura and repetier are already capable of working with this type of nozzle if you make dual extrusion prints. Just set the dual nozzle ofset to zero."

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Thanks.  That looks interesting.  I would imagine that two different materials found be a problem as the head would have to change temperature twice every layer say between PLA and ABS.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

More questions...

I see some printers where the bed only moves in the Z direction and some where the bed also moves fore and aft (y direction?).  Does the horizontally moving bed tend to make tall prints warp or fall over all together?  How does this affect precision.  What about speed?

Given sufficient knowledge and tinker time... can most printers be made to print to a similar detail level?

That's a good point.  I imagine the intent is to print two different materials (say two colors or one color and a support material) that can be extruded at the same temperature.

Typically you see beds that move in the Z direction (like Solidoodles) or Y (like Printrbots, with the nozzle moving in X & Z).  I use to think that prints would be more accurate with the bed only moving up and down, but after seeing a bunch of Y-moving beds I don't believe that makes much of a difference.  And with the bed and nozzle moving at the same time it can lead to faster print times.

I believe most popular FFF printer styles can be made to print to a similar detail level, but some printers will take more tinker time than others.

Not necessarily but it is a possibility as well.

How does this affect precision.  What about speed?

Precision wise it's about the same however one of the benefits is that you can have a dialed in
Build plate that doesn't require adjusting which saves you time on calibration.

Some of the downsides to this approach is that you suffer a little on speed and you have an
Increased foot print with the bed traveling past the length of the printer

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Forgot one

can most printers be made to print to a similar detail level?

Just like 3d-oodler said you can however if you really want extreme detail such
as the detail you would need from a complex engagement ring or war hammer 40k miniature model
then you can't beat an SLA printer.

Only thing is the cost is enormous compared to a FDM printer such as ours and in order to get the build volume your looking
for at the moment you would have to spend thousands of dollars as your build area requires a larger area then the form 1 which is 4.9 x 4.9 x 6.5 in and you don't get dual extrusion with sla.

The resin for the printers are extremely costly as well which they fail to.

If we have a failed print it will cost 2 dollars or less vs 10 to 30 dollars for a failed print with the resin based printers.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Thanks a bunch guys!  I'm getting close to making a decision.  Now if I can just figure out sketchup ;(

18

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

If you are trying to learn a new modeling program, skip sketchup and go for one of the free CAD programs that do solid modeling like 123D Design, Creo Elements or Tinkercad.  Then you won't have to worry about making mistakes with the mesh that will make it unprintable.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

Thanks Ian!  I could use some direction in that regard.  I tried 123D, but didn't feel like I had fine enough control, and kept looking for more tools.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

So what are you going to buy?
I have SD2 pro at this moment, and have a lot problems with Z wobble, I really hate those waves on printed models. Tried some hardware fixes, but result is not very good.
I am waiting for adrian tool to make software upgrades... with hope that software Z wobble compensation will solve this. It is good that SD is open source and many fixes are possible, but as I want to make small business with printing, then I want to buy second printer.
It should be dual extruders printer to print models with different support material...
And also I would like to have printed models without (Z-Y-X) periodical waves................
Guys,  Flash Forge seems to have thread also for Z... then it will have wobble also like Solidoodle.... are there not expensive models about 1000-1500 $ without wooble and as a result - without waves on model problems? Preferably with dual extruder and stand alone printing possibility..........?

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

I ordered a Bukobot Duo a few days ago.  I can't wait.

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

It isn't just threaded rod that causes the wobble, it is cheap inconsistent threaded rod, or a rod that is installed off center.  The more expensive printers use better rods so they are less prone to wobble.  Since the problem doesn't happen to all Solidoodles, I'm inclined to think it is the assembly that is the biggest problem.  They drill a hole in the bottom of the rod and slip it on to the motor shaft.  There have been some rods found to have that hole drilled off center which will create the wobble.

Ok.. then what you think about solution for this?
Need to replace this rod with the better one? Also with drilled hole or better with motor to rod gap detail?
And will it be possible to compensate this with software without changing rod? (I am waiting for adrian's tool)

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

More info on my decision.

My deciding factors:
Dual extruders.  I'm really interested in disolvable support materials.
Ability to print with ABS, HIPS, Nylon, polycarbonate.
8x8x8 build volume.
I like the aluminum frame, and the syncromesh cables.
I won't have to call overseas for support.
They have a brick and mortar retail location.
open source
The more I read into 3D printers the more I want to build it myself.

Thanks again,
Michael

Re: Help me choose a dual extruder printer please

For the past year I was dead set on a solidoodle but after reading all the reviews on the flashforge and comparing the two I ended up ordering the flashforge. The deciding factor for me was the SD card reader and the dual extruders. Also all the customer reviews that say they were printing within an hour of opening their flashforge printer. I would say the flashforge meets all your needs except the fact that it does have a wooden frame. Amazon has them for about $1150 but I found justpla.com still has them on sale for $950 and it comes with 2 spools of filament.
I hope this doesn't effect the forums view me for buying the FF!
