Topic: double e3d bowden extruder features request

I am trying to desing a double bowden e3d for the SD2. I think I have my head around the dimensional issues and have the following design features/restraints in mind.
1) maintain full z axis travel
2) minimize the distance between the extruder nozzles
3) maintain front view of nozzles( no fans in the way)
4) make the double easily removable for full sized prints
5)
Just a short list

Can you please provide your thoughts on what additional features that would be good?
Thanks

You mean like this, which looses 10mm of build space ? smile

Heres the sketch up and stls .. the main block uses a 40mm fan in place of 2x30mm, and you can snap off or edit the model to trim the side pieces of the fan shell to be level with the mounting block.

Attaches to lawsy's carriage or the stock sd one.

Do you want the cold-end stepper models too wink

This is cool Adrian! Do you have this setup on your SD?

intermittently, yes. I need to spend a bit more time fine-tuning the bowden tube lengths to minimize flexion effects...

+1

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: double e3d bowden extruder features request

Thanks Adrian
I really like the extruders as close as possible. I was thinking that a fan might be mounted behind the extuders above the 8mm slide bars and cool both the fans and the print. Do you think that would be possible?

I'll probably be rigging it up again this weekend as I might have a spare few hours to fiddle again, so I'll grab some pics of it all installed. I've also since changed my cold-end stepper setup to a much more minamalistic version...

You can't combine the active-cooling required with the E3D with a print-cooling fan - one needs to be g-code controlled PWM and shutoff quite often, the other needs to be always on... but in a Bowden setup you no longer have a huge stepper motor sitting ontop of the x-carriage.. so you have an ideal spot to plonk down a DC Blower Fan and run a very short piece of tubing to aim it at the nozzles (or run a splitter and aim directly at both nozzles) - something like this fella lying flat on its back with the exit pointed towards the extruders and then a short piece of plumbing to direct it properly (I've got a brass nozzle I made up, but teflon or PVC will work fine): http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTH99LeJaJQ6iyUPjre7GDgKmXjDBJdcwRSVd6grRZxxyWfYrNH

Re: double e3d bowden extruder features request

I dont know if it helps, but this is the design I made for a dual E3d bowden setup. Feel free to raid it for ideas...
